Located at less than 30 km from Brașov, on a cliff, at a strategic point which once was a fortress built by the Teutonic Knights for defending the southeastern border of Transylvania, Bran Castle was built in the 14th century by Transylvanian traders in order to defend themselves against the numerous Ottoman invasions.

Although he never visited Transylvania, Bram Stoker created, relying heavily on his own imagination, a mysterious, dark and fearsome aura of Count Dracula, which led to the myth that once the castle was the house of the Wallachian Prince Vlad the Impaler, painted by the historians of that time as a ruthless and blood thirsty despot.

Attested in the 14th century, the Râșnov Fortress is located on the site of an ancient wooden fortification built in the beginning of the 13th century by Teutonic Knights on the site of a former Dacian fortress. One of the most well-known, most visited and well-preserved fortified ensembles in the area, the fortress use to control through its strategic position the access to Transylvania from Râşnoavei Valley, serving as a military surveillance point on Bran road.

Stop At: Peasant Fortified Church at Prejmer, East side of the Brasov Depression, Prejmer 507165 Romania

The only place in Romania rated as 3 stars in the famous Michelin tourist guide, Prejmer is the oldest fortified church in Bârsa Country, the first church with the oldest painted altar, the best preserved citadel in eastern Europe and is part of the Cultural Patrimony UNESCO since 1999. The circular fortress, with 3-4 meters thick walls, 12 meters high and surrounded by ditches of water, was built around the church, having the role of defense against foreign invasions. Attacked many times, the city was conquered once only because the enemies had come as friends...

We had a great day and the tourguide gave us lot’s of interesting information not just about the castles and fortifications but also about the romanian culture and history.
