The fortress was built in 1211 by Gothic Knights Teutoni and is listed on UNESCO's list of cultural heritage. To defend themselves against Turkish invasions, the inhabitants of the settlement, Saxon origin, built the walls of the Peasant Fortress in the fifteenth century. The fortress has the shape of a circle surrounding the Evangelical Church, walls 12 meters high and 3-4 meters thick. The fortress has been attacked 50 times by the Turks. It is said that the city once fell into the hands of the enemies, but only because they had come as friends, and after they had penetrated the fortress they turned into conquerors. Prejmer Fortress is the only tourist destination in Romania that has received three stars in the Michelin Green Guide for tourism. The Black Church in Brasov has received two stars, and the same distinction is made by the capital.
