Bratislava Post-Communism Tour

2h30
About this activity
Sites covered during this 2,5-hour tour may vary a bit, but you will see most of these:
• the first prefabricated apartment block in Czechoslovakia as well as the largest socialist housing project in Europe, Petržalka
• abandoned and destroyed industrial objects as symbols of post-industrial transformations, new capitalist developments
• communist-era architecture (socialist realism, functionalism, brutalism)
• political objects: Soviet memorial Slavín, diplomatic 1970’s hotel, 1980’s parliament, villas of former communist leaders
• ride under the controversial ufo-like SNP bridge, causing destruction of the Jewish district
• 1930’s Czechoslovak fortification system, bunkers built against the potential Hitler’s invasion
• former Iron Curtain area, border between communist Czechoslovakia and Austria

Please note that in some cases (winter conditions, car repairs etc.) we can not guarantee the retro car, but go with our funky green 1992 VW Caravelle or other post-communist / capitalist car.

Of the many tours I've taken this was the most genuine and real (with no stop at the cousin/state owned gift shop, either!) Robert and his co guide took us and another couple in two great old cars to several sites around the city and to the old border. The personal details and insight really brought the past to life. From where the last person was killed trying to escape to the giant state run grocery store they showed us what life was really like. Imagine getting a banana once or twice a year (if you were good!) SO glad we did this.

This was the coolest tour we went on going down the Danube River. It helped us really understand the history of Slovakia and other countries surrounding it. Juro is awesome, intelligent and knows so much history about post soviet era and parts of their revolution from the USSR. Very unique!
