About this activity
Visit: German Emigration Center, Columbusstrasse 65, 27568 Bremerhaven, State of Bremen Germany

Between 1830 and 1974, 7.2 million people emigrated via Bremerhaven to the

New World. In the German Emigration Center visitors experience their stories -

and then also learn more about the paths of the immigrants to Germany. A

unique concept: Each visitor goes through the exhibition accompanied by an

authentic emigrant and immigrant biography and discovers their life story.

Interactive audio and video stations as well as authentic recreations make the

museum visit a real hands-on experience. There is also the possibility to

embark on a personal search for emigrated ancestors in our Family Research

room. For its exhibition concept the German Emigration Center was awarded as the European Museum of the Year 2007.

Equipped with a boarding pass, visitors embark on an unforgettable journey through time and experience the stories of the emigrants first hand. At the quay they first meet emigrants from various European countries. How did they experience this emotional moment of farewell and departure to an unknown country? Audio stations give visitors more information. Togetherthey board the ship, where visitors meet snoring passengers in their cabins and passengers in a dining room on board an Ocean Liner in 1923. Having arrived at the immigration station Ellis Island, they now have to undergo an immigration test at the legal desk, like some 12 million immigrants to the United States, hoping to enter the country. With the entry permit in hand, a loud buzz of voices in Grand Central Terminal in New York await them. Here, visitors will learn more about the life of the emigrants in the New World -from fulfilled and shattered dreams, departure and homesickness.

In addition, in the second part of the exhibition, visitors encounter a reconstruction of a 1970ties shopping mall, where they can follow the paths of the immigrants living in Germany today and find out more about their moving life stories. There is also the possibility to embark on a personal search for emigrated ancestors in our Family Research room. Our museum cinema showcases exclusive movies about the lives of the emigrants and immigrants.
