The most original project of Festival della Valle d’Itria is, for sure, the “Opera in Masseria”. It is well appreciated and attended by both Italian and foreign enthusiasts. Opera takes place in a unique location, the apulian farmhouses and meets with Apulia tipycal Wine and foood. Opera music, Primitivo di Manduria Wine tasting and a typical Apulia aperitif: taralli, focaccia, mozzarella, local salty skacks and, of course, Capocollo of Martina Franca.

The much-awaited events of the series “Opera in masseria” will “tour” around five venues across the area: Masserie “Del Duca” in Crispiano, “Belvedere” in Mottola, “Palesi” and “San Michele” in Martina Franca, “Casina Vitale” in Ceglie Messapica. These masserie will be the setting for two eighteenth-century pieces of the comic genre: Intermezzi - short entertaining music actions deriving from the tradition of Commedia dell’arte-: L’ammalato immaginario by Leonardo Vinci, and La vedova ingegnosa by Giuseppe Sellitti, directed by Davide Gasparro, conducted by Sabino Manzo and his Apulian ensemble, the Cappella Musicale Santa Teresa dei Maschi; you’ll want to watch Lavinia Bini and Bruno Taddia, young vocal promises.
L’ammalato immaginario stages the stories of the typical hypochondriac à la Molière. Don Chilone is deceived into marrying Erighetta, a cunning widow whose sole objective is to move up the social scale and takes advantage of the elderly co-protagonist’s fears.
La vedova ingegnosa follows protagonists Drusilla and Strabone: the former is determined to re-marry, and succeeds to break through the latter’s resistance. He is an improvised medical man, a coward with a strong sense of humour and lots of money. Success is guaranteed by theatrical expedients (including disguises) and paradoxical incidents created by puns and a whole variety of music forms and styles, expertly dosed for the necessities of the theatre.
