About this activity
This is a tour of the Romanesque Basilica and Historic Jewish Quarter & Historic Town of Trebic and Renaissance Chateau and Town Center of Telc. The ancient Renaissance town of Telc, called the Venice of Moravia, gives the impression of fairytale town; it's fitting that a number of fairytales and historical movies were filmed here. The city takes pride in having Gothic Chateau and the most picturesque town square in our country - Zacharias of Hradec Square. The Square alone consists of 71 houses that rose in the Gothic plots, mostly before the year 1530. An arcade, which was built around the perimeter of the square in the mid 16th century, creates the typical character of the square. Qualified Italian artists helped transform the Gothic dwellings into neat-looking houses. The Trebic Jewish monuments, along with those found in Jerusalem, are the only ones that have been listed as UNESCO sites. This exceptional architectural complex is extremely well-preserved. The only comparable ghetto in Europe can perhaps be found in Venice. Trebic once belonged to the important centers of Jewish culture in Moravia and the uniquely preserved Jewish quarter is a testament to co-existence between Jews and Christians. The Jewish quarter, with its dense housing, includes more than 120 homes complemented by the buildings of the former Jewish institutions - synagogues, town hall, rabbinate and the poorhouse. Part of it is a Jewish cemetery, where approximately 3,000 tombstones can be seen - the oldest one dates back to the year 1631.
