Itinerary

Day 1: Broome to Windjana Gorge

Pass By: Windjana Gorge National Park, Fairfield Leopold Downs Rd Derby, Flinders Ranges National Park, South Australia 6728 Australia
We depart Broome early this morning and head for Windjana Gorge, passing Boab trees (including the famous Prison Tree) and vast savannah woodlands interspersed with giant and unusual termite mounds.

We’ll visit the Mowanjum Aboriginal Art and Culture Centre where local artists display work depicting Wandjina and Gwion Gwion figures in an art form based on cave paintings.

Day 2: Windjana Gorge & Tunnel Creek

Pass By: Tunnel Creek National Park, Leopold Downs Road King Leopold Ranges, Broome, Western Australia 6728 Australia
oday we explore the length of Windjana Gorge with a 7km return walk. The high walls of this gorge were once part of an ancient Devonian reef that surrounded the Kimberley. With its varied bird life, interesting reef walls and its many freshwater crocodiles, Windjana will keep us enthralled for hours.

In the afternoon we visit Tunnel Creek, spending time walking through the 750 m long cave system. Tunnel Creek is a significant site for the local Bunaba people.

Day 3: Windjana Gorge to Silent Grove

Pass By: Gibb River Road, Between Derby and Kununurra, Western Australia Australia
Enjoy an early morning walk beside the walls of the limestone range before leaving Windjana. We head through the Napier Range for our campsite at Silent Grove.

We will spend time this afternoon visiting Bell Creek Gorge with its many rock pools, rapids and a waterfall. This is a spectacular spot for a swim.

Day 4: Silent Grove to Manning Creek

Pass By: Gibb River Road, Between Derby and Kununurra, Western Australia Australia
Back onto the Gibb River Road we head to Mt Barnett Station, home to the beautiful Manning Gorge. We’ll stop for a short walk and a luxurious swim at picture-perfect Galvan’s Gorge on the way.

After setting up camp, relax under a giant boab tree or enjoy a swim in the magnificent oasis of nearby Manning Creek.

Day 5: Manning Creek and Gorge

Pass By: Gibb River Road, Between Derby and Kununurra, Western Australia Australia
Leaving early from our campsite, we follow an open, beautiful walk trail to Manning Gorge and Falls. Swim, relax and soak in the atmosphere while you enjoy a home-made morning tea, carried in by your guides.

Another swim in the afternoon? Why not!

Day 6: Manning Creek to El Questro Station

Pass By: El Questro Wilderness Park, 75 Coolibah Dr, Kununurra, Western Australia 6743 Australia
Enjoy the scenery and a true blue ‘Gibb River Road massage’ today on this mostly driving day. The typical Kimberley scenery includes the Pentecost River Lookout, which overlooks the river floodplain and the tabletop Cockburn Ranges beyond. We’ll cross the Durack River and pass the site of the old Durack River Homestead, destroyed by flood in 2002.

Day 7: El Questro Station

Pass By: El Questro Wilderness Park, 75 Coolibah Dr, Kununurra, Western Australia 6743 Australia
During these two days there are plenty of walking and swimming options that we can undertake at El Questro. These include Amalia Gorge, Emma Gorge & El Questro Gorge walks. Plus, we’ll enjoy a luxuriant soak in Zebedee Thermal Springs. There is an optional cruise on Chamberlain Gorge if anyone wants an easy afternoon.

Day 8: El Questro Station

Day 9: El Questro to Kununurra

Pass By: Parry Lagoons Nature Reserve, 80 Km Nw of Kununurra, Kununurra, Western Australia 6743 Australia
This morning we head for Kununurra, visiting the Ramsar wetland Parry Lagoons on the way – a wonderful spot to view masses of waterbirds. There will be time in the afternoon to catch up on washing, postcards or just to relax. The crew will be organising the fresh food for the next section of the trip.

Dinner is not included tonight to give you the opportunity to taste some local delights.

Day 10: Kununurra to Purnululu (Bungle Bungle)

Pass By: Bungle Bungle Range, Purnululu National Park, Western Australia 6743 Australia
This morning we leave Kununurra and head for Purnululu National Park – one of only three natural World Heritage sites in Western Australia. The 53 kilometre 4wd road into the park is our reintroduction to outback tracks with creek crossings, wash aways and rough slow sections. After setting up camp, we can go for a stroll and watch the sun set against the red rock of the Bungle Bungle Range – bring a drink if you like!

Day 11: Purnululu (Bungle Bungle)

Pass By: Bungle Bungle Range, Purnululu National Park, Western Australia 6743 Australia
We spend the next two days exploring the natural wonders the park including Echidna Chasm, Mini Palms Gorge, the spectacular orange and black ‘beehive’ domes, Piccanniny Creek and Cathedral Gorge.

There is time during our stay for an optional helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungle Range – a fantastic way to see and appreciate this completely unique and beautiful landscape.

Day 12: Purnululu (Bungle Bungle)

This morning we leave Purnululu and make the return journey to Kununurra. This wonderful outback experience will end on our arrival back in town where you will be transferred to your chosen accommodation.

  • Our tours are ideally suited for active over 50 year olds.
  • While this is a walking tour you do not need to be an elite athlete to complete our tours. The walks in the Kimberley are not particularly difficult. Some are quite rocky underfoot however none are particularly long, so we can afford to take our time. Most of the walks include an opportunity to swim in a beautiful water hole.
  • Each person will be given their own tent but they are big enough to share with a travel companion also
  • May to August is the best time in the Kimberley. There is still lots of water in the swimming holes and waterfalls, but the chance of getting rain is much reduced. The days will be warm and evenings mild.
