About this activity
Visit: Porte de Hal, 150, Boulevard du Midi, Brussels 1060 Belgium

Although thousands of people pass every day close to this remaining part of the second surrounding wall of Brussels, along the "petite ceinture" between the Place Louise and the Midi Station, very few of them are conscious of its eventful history.

Don't hesitate to come and learn the history of the building and of City life in the Middle Ages, and at the same time admire the most important items of this rich past!

The sole remaining medieval city gate of Brussels shares the tale of its life and that of the fortified city. This last preserved relic will catapult you centuries back in time with its amazing stories of cunningly crafted plans and chance events, of alliances and conflicts.

An interactive tour through the striking rooms of the 14th century city gate will reveal how Brussels defended itself against external attacks during the Middle Ages and present the role that townspeople played in defence of their city. Visitors will gain a better understanding of the medieval city and its impact on present-day metropolitan Brussels by trying on a piece of armour, checking out models and short films, exploring multimedia activities or just simply admiring the beautiful selection of museum pieces.

And, the changing temporary exhibits on past and current life in the city are always a great reason to return to the Halle Gate. Best of all, the crenellated walkway around the top of the monument offers a spectacular view of the sprawling capital.

Temporary Exhibition on until November 25th, 2018: Little Life
The basis of the exhibition is an exceptional dollhouse, made around 1900, modelled upon a neoclassical Brussels house. Together with all sorts of other toys we show you from the parlour to the bathroom what the house, interior decoration and the daily life of a wealthy family looked like.

For the kids: A lively display with DIY activities, a 3D animation and play-area with giant dollhouse, a craft- and reading corner makes the exhibition really fun for children.
