About this activity
You will meet your guide in front of Bellu Cemetery where the tour starts. The cemetery is easily reached by subway, a 5 minutes trip from the central subway station Unirea.
The first attraction of the tour is a veritable open-air museum of dramatic statues and funeral chapels, many of them historical monuments. It's the most impressive cemetery in Romania, and a walk here is in fact a great chance to observe fine works of art done by major Romanian and foreign architects. The tour of the cemetery takes around 1 hour, followed by a 10 minutes walk to the next stop, Carol Park.
Over a century world, built during the time of King Carol the 1st, this park is one of the most beautiful and popular parks in Bucharest. The Heroes' Mausoleum, several statues, a romantic lake and a panoramic view over the Parliament are the iconic elements of Carol Park.
Half an hour walk through old neighbourhoods that were not demolished or badly altered by communist constructions. Stop at the next attraction of the tour, Antim Church. Over three centuries old, this state of the art church was actually moved from its original location to make room for the Parliament and the major civic center built by the communists over 30 years ago. The church has beautful rock carved columns, mosaics and an impressive interior.
Twenty minutes walk through the communist civic center to Unirii Square and from there to the Choral Temple, one of the few synagogues that still exists in Bucharest. Built in the 19th century, this synagogue survived the Holocaust, but also the destruction of the Jewish neighbourhood from the communist decades.
The tour ends in front of the 0 km of Bucharest, across the boulevard from the Old Town, within a couple of meters from the University Square.
