Constanta Private Shore Excursion: Jewish Bucharest and city tour

1 day
Private
About this activity
Your private driver-guide will meet you at the pier at 8am, right after you leave the ship. On the 2-hour drive to Bucharest, your private driver-guide will introduce you to the history and culture of Romania, giving you also a great insight into present-day Romania.

Both on the way to Bucharest and back water, juice and snacks will be complementary.

Head to the former Jewish quarter and visit the Jewish Museum housed in a beautiful former synagogue from 1836, the Holy Union Temple. Our tour takes us further to the Great Synagogue from 1845, a historical monument. The synagogue features beautiful decorations and an exhibition about the Holocaust in Romania. Close to the Great Synagogue lies the State Jewish theater. It was founded some 140 years ago as a theater.

The tour continues with the Jewish Community Center, where you will meet some members of the Jewish Community of Bucharest. You will then visit the center and find out more about the cultural activity of the community.

After a further stroll through the former Jewish quarter, you will visit the Choral Temple, the main synagogue of Bucharest. It was built in Moorish style between 1864-1866. We will then leave this area and visit the Holocaust Memorial of Bucharest.

Nearby lies the Ceausescu Palace, the nowadays Palace of Parliament, the second largest building in the world (view only)! We will drive around the building and make a stop in front of it.

After the visit, you can have lunch in the Old Town. We will have a stroll along the streets of this former merchants quarter. Many merchants of Bucharest were Armenian, Jewish and Greek, who left the city after the communists took over. Now, this whole area is full of street cafees and restaurants. You will visit the very fine 18th century Stavropoleos monastery, see the ruins of the former princely court and the impressive Manuc Inn, built in 1808, serving the caravans of merchants coming from the Orient and going further to Transylvania, Budapest and Vienna.

In the afternoon, we will drive back to Constanta port and arrive at the ship in time for your departure.
