Stop At: Muzeul National al Satului "Dimitrie Gusti", Kiseleff Road 28-30 In King Michael I Park, Bucharest 011347 Romania

Your first stop is at The National Village Museum – an open-air reconstruction of the traditional Romanian village.

“The architecture of a country is, perhaps, the most accurate expression of its history” (M. Cantacuzino). For many older Romanians, entering the National Village Museum is like going back to the childhood days spent in the countryside. For everyone else, this is the perfect place to discover the authentic Romanian village, with folklore elements and buildings originating from all historical provinces and going back all the way to the 17th century.

Your private guide will show you the reef-roofed houses of Danube Delta, the simple elegant architecture of Moldavia or Wallachia and the exquisitely wooden carved facades of Transylvanian houses. You can admire steep-roofed peasant homes, thatched barns, log cabins, watermills, windmills, wooden churches, oil presses, road crucifixes and many more. After this stop, you’ll understand why traditions still survive intact in some Romanian villages, despite countless invasions starting from ancient times (Romans), going through medieval (Mongols, ottomans, Hapsburgs) or modern era (Soviet Union). The perfect answer to this is an old folk saying: people from the country-side form a community while people from the cities form a society.

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Old Town, Bucharest Romania

The 2nd stop is about wine tasting – enjoy local Romanian wines plus traditional cheese & dry sausages in one of the city’s oldest wine bars. After the tour at the village museum, your private guide will drive you to the win bar, located right next to Old Town.

Romania – the world’s 13th largest wine producer with over 2000 years of viticulture tradition. We believe that knowledge of a region’s food and wine is intrinsic to understanding its culture. Thus, the next stop is at Bucharest’s first wine bar, in a century old manor. The traditional architecture, elegant interior and the wine bottles displayed like books on shelves all create a perfect setting for wine tasting.

Whether you’re a casual wine drinker or a true connoisseur, you’ll enjoy yourself as you discover the distinctive “terroir” of famous Romanian vineyards like Dealu Mare, where the wine is nicknamed “liquid gold”. You’ll be able to taste 4 different types of local wines, along with a plate of traditional cheese & dry sausages.

A fantastic tour, Mihai was the best guide we could have hoped for. My partner and I took this tour on our first day in Romania and had such a great time chatting to Mihai about anything and everything Romanian - modern history, ancient history, politics, food, wine, Bucharest, Transylvania, the list goes on! Mihai is friendly and knowledgeable, and he helped us understand the country and its history so much better for the rest of our trip we both came away repeatedly saying what a brilliant tour it had been. The village museum was a fascinating place to visit, and we both enjoyed the wine tasting and the traditional cheeses and smoked sausage very much. Our accommodation address was listed wrongly on the accommodation's website with directions not matching the address, which we had discovered only on arriving in Bucharest and heading to the wrong street on the other side of town. I was a little worried this would affect the accommodation pick-up for the tour, but Mihai was very organised: he looked up the address in plenty of time, hit the same problem and gave us a call to check our actual whereabouts an hour before the tour was due to start. This ensured a punctual pick up at the right place which was much appreciated! Communication by email before the tour was also very good, with Olivia getting in touch straight away to confirm the booking and to ask our preferred start-time. Unveil Romania is a highly professional tour company and we couldn't have asked for more. Thank you Olivia and Mihai for the great experience, conversation, tips, and fun! - Vicky and Tim. P.S. how lovely also to bump into Mihai again two days later giving a tour at Peles Castle in Transylvania many miles away!

I have only the highest praise for Mihai, Olivia, and Unveil Romania tours. I have two small kids, and both the Village Museum and the wine tasting bar were extremely family-friendly. Mihai is so knowledgeable about Romania...history, politics, architecture. He came prepared with printed maps and photos to help us understand where the Village Museum's structures came from, as well as where our wines were made. Further, I appreciated how safely he drove. Bucharest traffic can be heavy and unpredictable. His car was comfortable and roomy and we felt completely at ease the entire time.
