About this activity
Budapest has hosted Jewish communities for centuries, and this 3-hour, private walking tour provides a comprehensive overview of the city's Jewish history. Your guide, who doubles as a historian, will meet you at your accommodation before leading you on a journey of the city’s most essential and compelling Jewish landmarks. Both morning tours (beginning at 10am) and afternoon tours (beginning at 1 or 2pm depending on the season) are available to book, and your itinerary has some flexibility, depending on your interests.

Major sites to visit on this tour include the Dohány Street Synagogue — also known as the Great Synagogue, and the second largest on Earth —the classical Óbuda Synagogue, and the streets of Budapest’s Districts VII and VIII, which were at one time Jewish working class neighborhoods (and which are still home to a number of smaller prayer houses and shtibls today).

You’ll also have the opportunity to explore the area that housed the Pest Ghetto, and, on the Buda side of the river, can discover remnants of synagogues on Castle Hill that date to medieval times. Throughout the tour, your guide will provide fascinating stories about Jewish life in Budapest.

Your 3-hour walking tour will conclude at the Pest Ghetto.
