About this activity
Budapest has the biggest Jewish community in Central-East Europe, with an active religious, artistic and historical heritage. Throughout the centuries the Hungarian and Jewish history has been so entwined that it is almost inseparable. Jews played, and still play today, an important role in the country’s economic, cultural and political life.

The tour includes: an interior visit to the Dohany Street Synagogue, which is the largest in Europe, a ticket to the Jewish Museum, which has an important and unique collection of art pieces from Hungary and Eastern Europe; a visit to the Holocaust Cemetery where thousand were buried during the ghetto times; and the Raul Wallenberg Memorial Park with the Tree of Life which was created to remind us of those who perished in the war. We also pass by the Heroes Temple, which was built in memory of those who gave their lives during WWII.

Then - to understand the present - we continue our walk to the newly rejuvenated Jewish Quarter, which was used as a ghetto during the WWII and it hosts synagogues, monuments, kosher restaurants, and shops. We will see the Carl Lutz Memorial and you will walk through the gate of the ghetto on Madach Square.

You will take a break with coffee and cake in a nice kosher Café of the Jewish District.

Anita arrived at our hotel to take us on our Jewish Waking Tour and we have to say our tour with her was the HIGHLIGHT OF OUR TRIP. Our day was filled with emotions as she took us on a train to the Jewish Quarter and walked the area to the Great Dohany Street Synagogue. She talked about the history of the neighborhood and all the other areas we walked through. On our tour in the Great Synagogue it was an emotional one for me and I started to shed some tears so she knew how deep this went. She gave us our time to regroup and then continued to talk about the history in detail. We saw the Emanuel Tree or Tree of Life Sculpture which has the victims names inscribed on each leaf. She told us of the artist and how to this day they still come out and engrave names on the leaves when they learn of a new victims name. We went to the memorial cemetery. She then took us to Kazinczy Orthodox Synagogue, Szabadsag Square memorial park, Shoes on the Danube and more. We saw so much in the one day it was truly amazing. We went to a little kosher pastry shop and sat with her and chatted while eating a delicious FLODNI pastry and coffee which was included in tour. I asked her questions on her heritage and she said she was a Hungarian and studied History, but truly was drawn to Jewish History of her country and has a passion to always increase her knowledge and share that with others. We walked quite a bit and learned so much more than expected. She has passion for what she does and meant so much to me. We were taking a Jewish Heritage River cruise with Uniworld after our Budapest visit which we did on our own. In all of our travels throughout our Jewish Heritage trip with the river cruise, their own tour guides could not hold a candle to Anita. Anita surpassed all our expectations and she was lovely young lady, She went above and beyond what we expected. She gave us an experience of a lifetime which we always remember and cherish. You must take this tour and ask for Anita ! Perfect to take your children on this tour and show them so much in a day.

Our tour guide was so knowledge. He was young , Enthusiastic and was willing to show us all the sights. This was such an important part of Hungry history and I would recommend it to all that come to Budapest not only Jews.
