- Built in 528, the temple has been the representative relic of Gyeongju and Korea as a whole. It was designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1995 along with Seokguram.
- It is home to many important cultural relics that include six National Treasures and many Treasures (designated by Korean government), and the excellence of each of the treasures is just overwhelmingly beautiful.
- Dabotop pagoda (National Treasure No. 20) and Seokgatap pagoda (the three-story stone pagoda, National Treasure No. 21) stand to the east and west of the frontal area of the temple’s Daeungjeon Hall, respectively. Despite the simplicity of the platform and body of the pagoda without decoration, its upper extremity looks splendid.

- This oldest astronomical observatory in Korea, National Treasure No. 31, is characterized by its uniqueness that remains intact since it was constructed during the reign of Queen Seon-deok in 7th Century.
- The indirect lightings are installed in the surrounding promenade of Cheomseongdae, which allows a beautiful night view.

- Along with Cheomseongdae, Anapji, the best night viewing spot in Gyeongju, has beautiful gardens which are well-preserved in the original shape of Unified Silla's gardens.
- It was also a banquet site for important national event and important visitors.
- In the 1980s, pottery fragment with letters “Wolji” (a pond that reflects the moon) carved onto it was found, revealing the true name of the pond. Since then, the name has changed from Anapji to 'Donggung and Wolji'.
