Le Havre Shore Excursion: Private Day Tour with Omaha Beach & American Cemetery

1 day
Private
About this activity
While your ship is in Le Havre, take this private tour of key American D-Day locations, when Allied forces landed in Normandy to retake Europe from the Germans during World War II.
Meet your guide at Le Havre harbor and travel to Normandy’s coast in your comfortable private vehicle. On the way, listen as your guide recounts the story of the Allied invasion, led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower. The operation was set to launch on June 4, 1944, but due to poor weather conditions, the future US president postponed the mission.
After a more promising forecast the next evening, Eisenhower gave the go-ahead for more than 150,000 American, French, Canadian and British troops to descend on five code-named beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. Visit Pointe du Hoc, where Army Rangers stormed a German clifftop battery. Learn how they managed to scale the 100-foot (30-meter) cliff on rope ladders and capture the German post despite being heavily bombarded.
Head for Omaha Beach, the most challenging beach for landings because of its strong tides and formidable cliffs. Hear accounts of the brave US soldiers who waded ashore from a landing craft only to enter a relentless crossfire from the Nazi forces. Omaha saw the highest D-Day casualties with thousands of soldiers reported dead, wounded or missing.
In the afternoon, visit the poignant Normandy American Cemetery, where 9,387 Americans are buried. The vast graveyard overlooks the “Easy Red” sector of Omaha Beach, near where many of the buried soldiers were killed. Then, visit the cemetery's visitor center to remember the heroes of D-day and the Battle for Normandy. View the compelling displays charting the attack, and see the vivid videos and photos that bring the campaign to life.
Continue to the well-preserved Longues-sur-Mer battery, a German stronghold situated a 200-foot (60-meter) cliff. The original big guns still stand on the clifftop, a sobering sight to see as you marvel at the courage of the British Devonshire Regiment who captured the battery on June 6.
After your tour, reflect on you day as you journey back to Le Havre port where your excursion finishes.

A perfect day. Our guide, Celine, arrived on time, was extremely knowledgeable, professional and delightful. We thought we were pretty well informed about D-Day. While Celine was explaining her maps and photo album all along the way, we realized that there is a lot more to learn. Being at the D-Day site and the cemetery brought forth much emotion and pride in the sacrifices that these young adults made that changed the world This day was the highlight of our trip!

Phillip picked us up at the cruise terminal right on time. He was very knowledgeable and we all learned a lot. My only complaint is he left us on several occasions to to go have a smoke and I just wish he would've stayed with us as we wandered around to answer any of our questions. This tour was pricey for the 7 of us and it bothered us that he left us a few times. At lunch time he took us to his friend's cafe and didn't really give us a choice of where we wanted to eat. I also asked him to take us to a certain intact gun turret and he dismissed it out of hand. I then showed him a photo of what I wanted a photo in front of and he finally agreed to take us to the beach where they were.

Romain, our driver was incredibly knowledgeable and very accommodating. Great experience all the way around! Fantastic just wish we would have docked in Cherbourg. La Harve is a bit of a ways to the landing beaches.

Excellent Tour. We had a chance to see anything and everything. Guide is willing to adjust schedule and take you to wherever you want to go. We took a short lunch and were able to see another destroyed German Battery. This is much better than a bus tour. We took this tour from a Princess Cruise and had no issues with pick up or drop off.

Great tour with a great guide-Johnathan. We were met at the ship and were on our way. Johnathan shared the history and culture of Normandy as we drove through the countryside. The landing sites and cemetery were interesting and a moving experience. All 8 of us agreed that it was a 5 star experience

Francois was our driver and historical guide. He knew all the history about D Day. We stopped at Pointe du Hoc and saw all the bunkers and points the Allies came in. Then to the American Cemetery which is so sobering to see. Next Omaha Beach. Totally amazing day. Francois made it all come to life. Great time, well worth the time and money. Thanks Francois!
