About this activity
Mémorial de Caen

Choose to explore the museum at your own pace on the same day as your guided tour or on a different day, whatever is most convenient for you (your admission ticket will be valid for 24 hours). This museum and war memorial tells the riveting story of D-Day within the larger context of historical events ranging from the end of World War I to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Learn about the preparation for and execution of the massive invasion by exploring on your own, or from your in-depth audio guide, available in six languages. You can enjoy lunch at the museum's restaurant or cafe (own expense).

D-Day Sites Guided Tour

Join your informative guide — trained by the museum's historians — for an educational and poignant morning or afternoon tour of sites related to the Normandy landings on D-Day that helped the Allies win the war. You will set off in a luxury, air-conditioned minivan and travel first to the Arromanches-Les-Bains' artificial harbor, where Allied forces brought in the hundreds of vehicles and many tons of weapons and materials needed for their assault. You will get to watch the 20 minutes' long film "Normandy's 100 Days" at the Arromanches 360 circular Cinema.

Next, you will the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial at Colleville-sur-Mer, where white crosses stretching far in all directions symbolize the terrible cost of war. You will then continue to the clifftop Pointe du Hoc, where the US Army Ranger Assault Group mounted a heroic attack.

Your tour culminates with a drive past the main Normandy landing beaches including Omaha Beach and the opportunity to set foot on one of those beaches yourself.

Return to Mémorial de Caen after your 5-hour tour of D-Day sites with a much clearer understanding of how that fateful day helped define the outcome of World War II.

Sites visited: the artificial harbour at Arromanches, Arromanches 360 Circular Cinema, the American Military Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, Omaha Beach and the Pointe du Hoc.

Overall great tour, would highly recommend. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and gave us a ton of information about all the D-Day sites that we wouldn't have known by just driving to them ourselves.

The tour was wonderful, a highlight of our trip for all six of us. The vehicle was clean and comfortable. The guide was well-spoken, friendly, and enthusiastic, as well as full of information at each stop -- she was a terrific guide and we felt comfortable with her driving as well! We thought the tour length was good, not too long or short, and the selection of points of interest to stop at were great. We specially enjoyed Point du Hoc and the American Cemetery. The museum itself is also excellent -- if you have any interest in D-day or WWII, this is the best place to get a broad perspective coupled with terrific details of life and trials of the time. Although there are many military artifacts, the emphasis is less on equipment and more on the lives of those impacted by the war and how they coped with it. The price was reasonable, and when we needed to amend our order to add an additional person, it was smoothly handled. Overall we were very pleased. However, we would make two comments for improvement. First, the air conditioner in the van was so loud, that those in the back seat could not hear the guide. It was a hot day, so we kept the air on, and rotated seating among ourselves. Second, we specifically requested and were booked for a morning tour. We took special pains to drive to Caen early, to be certain we were there not later than 8:45 AM, arriving at 8:15. When we arrived we found the doors don't open until 9 AM, and when admitted, we were told by museum staff that morning tours were not offered at all this year, but they had booked us for the afternoon. Viator should have known the morning tours no longer exist, and advised us in advance, since we booked months ahead of time. This was an annoying discovery, because the 5-hour afternoon tour starts at 1 PM -- if we had a train to catch or other obligation in the afternoon before 6 PM or so, we would not have been able to take the tour at all -- not a good situation. This was our first Viator tour, so we will be wary of future bookings.

The Caen museum is very nice and tells the story well. The guided tour was good, but my friends and I are military history buffs, so we did not really learn anything new. For those who are not, however, the guides know their stuff and present it well. the small size of the groups is a plus.

The 5 hour guided tour followed by the Memorial de Caen Museum was SUPERB. Our tour guide, LAURA BARBOSA, provided excellent narrative on the setting and events of the D-Day invasion -- would highly recommend her for well-paced, comprehensive, and pleasant presentation skills, fluent in both French and English. Starting with the explanation of the Normandy environment and what led to the timing of D-Day in the comfortable van driven by a wonderful driver, the guided tour stops at all significant stops with in-depth description that was packed with insights. For my husband, a US History teacher of 25 years, this was a WOW experience to illuminate and expand on WW II history. Laura was responsive to any questions posed by the tour group and clearly committed to assuring that each member was satisfied in their learning. One might drive through the Normandy D-Day sites on a self guided tour but could not be able to capture all the important take-aways as provided by a skilled tour guide with stops including Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery. So glad we participated in the tour -- THANKS for the terrific experience.
