About this activity
Visit: Memorial de Caen, Esplanade General Eisenhower, 14050 Caen France

Begin your exploration of the Mémorial de Caen anytime during open hours. Serving as both a war memorial and museum, the Mémorial de Caen is a tribute to the city of Caen, three-quarters of which was destroyed when it was liberated during the Battle of Normandy. With a theme of reconciliation, the museum discusses World War II and D-Day within the historical framework of events ranging from the end of World War I through the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Wander through museum areas focused on WWII and the Cold War. There is also a section featuring cartoons and drawings chronicling the history of the 20th century as well as current affairs. The heart of the museum is devoted to D-Day, and the Mémorial de Caen is the only museum in Normandy that offers an in-depth exploration of the preparations for the Normandy landings on both sides of the war and details the intensity of the 100-day invasion that followed.

Watch a film on D-Day that tells the story of that fateful day through archival footage and scenes from fictional films depicting German and Allied forces on the eve of the Normandy landings. Another movie, 'Hope for the Future,' covers events from the 1940s through the end of the 20th century.

Discover the museum through the interactive exhibits or opt to use an audio guide available in six languages for a more in-depth experience. Take a break and grab a bite to eat (own expense) at the casual Café du Mémorial, which serves sandwiches, salads and snacks, or at La Terrasse, a more formal restaurant. You can also bring a picnic and enjoy it on the grounds. If you need more time to finish exploring the museum, come back the following day; your ticket is valid for 24 hours from the time of entry.

Very good museum. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about WW11.

The statue in the front (sailor kissing girl--the iconic Times Sq. photo) was a perfect start to a well planned guide to how WWII came about and the impact it had on so many millions of humans on the Earth. I was curious why this particular ground was chosen, learning later of the Nazi bunker under the structure that one can tour. Outstanding. Finally, the 50th anniversary U.S. memorial resonated with me after reading the passage in the floor of the entrance: "From the heart of our land flows the blood of our youth, given to you in the name of freedom."

We booked all of our activities through Viator and had a wonderful experience. I needed to change one reservation before we even left the U.S.A. and the staff was very accommodating. We drove from Paris to Caen, which took longer than we expected so missed our reserved date for admission to the museum, but went the following day and the museum staff were very gracious and accepted our vouchers. We definately will use Viator again! Victoria P.
