Great Barrier Reef Luxury Snorkel and Dive Cruise from Cairns

1 day
About this activity
Your Great Barrier Reef adventure begins with check-in at the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal. Once on board the luxury 65-foot (20-meter) catamaran, enjoy coffee, tea, fruit and muffins prior to departure.

As you cruise to Upolu Cay, relax in the air-conditioned interior deck or on the outdoor sundeck. The crew will provide a safety briefing, and if you choose the introductory or certified scuba diving option, you’ll also fill out your paperwork.

Your first stop is Upolu Cay, a naturally formed coral cay situated 19 miles (30 km) from Cairns on the Great Barrier Reef. The cay's protected shallow waters make it the perfect location to explore the reef, for both snorkelers and scuba divers. Drop anchor and take a glass-bottom boat tour from the catamaran to Upolu Cay. Then jump in the stunning turquoise water for your snorkeling adventure or your introductory or certified dive among an array of coral, reef fish, and starfish.

After working up an appetite, enjoy a delicious buffet lunch on board while cruising from Upolu Cay to Upolu Reef. Feast on smoked salmon, chilled prawns, cold chicken and other meats, accompanied by salad and fresh bread.

You’ll soon arrive at the amazing dive and snorkel site known as the ‘Wonder Wall,’ located on the outer edge of Upolu Reef. Rising 46 feet (14 meters) from the ocean floor, the ‘Wonder Wall’ plateaus just below the water's surface, making it a perfect spot for both snorkelers and divers. Be amazed by the many different types of hard and soft coral, giant clams, turtles and reef fish of all shapes and sizes. Learn more about the reef on an informative drift snorkel tour with a marine naturalist.

After a full six hours exploring the Great Barrier Reef, cruise back to Cairns as the crew serves a selection of tropical fruit, cheese, crackers and a decadent cake platter.

The highlight was the helpful and fun loving crew and ratio of crew to passengers. Also, this company limits the number of passengers which nicely resulted in there being ample room to sit and move around. The boat was modern, fast and handled the rough water very well. The day we went out, wind was gusting at 25-30 km. Per the advice of the crew, we purchased and took motion sickness pills before leaving the dock and it worked. A few folks didn't and they were miserable. Food was good and plentiful and presented buffet style. Unfortunately for us the rough seas stirred up the sediment and reduced visibility, but that wasn't anything the crew could control. All in all, a very memorable day.

It was a great trip. The crew was amazing. They were helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. The food was excellent. We went two very different areas of the reef which made it even more interesting.

My wife loves to snorkel, but I am disabled and had to give up snorkeling some time ago. But I still went with her on this Great Barrier Reef cruise, and I am so glad I did! Not only does this cruise offer both snorkeling and SCUBA diving to see the reef and its marine life, but they also have a glass-bottom boat. Their glass-bottom boat seats at least 20 people and the view of the reef is very good. Although there are not large numbers of reef fish, I saw more than most of the snorkelers. I even saw two giant clams and a barracuda. Snorkelers should be aware that there are a lot fewer reef fish to be seen here than they may be used to seeing in places like Hawaii.

We had an amazing time on our snorkeling excursion! Though we went on a rather rough and rainy day, we enjoyed every minute of the trip. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, offering information and guidance throughout the day. The lunch served was also quite lovely. I would recommend to anyone.

My nephew is a beginning diver and I allowed him to go on this dive cruise solo. He reported that the staff was professional and safety practices were in place.

The boat and crew were fantastic as was the meal and service. However, the time of year, cloudy, windy weather and tide did not cooperate. We should have researched the climate more or perhaps they should not schedule tours when the visibility is going to be so poor?
