About this activity
After pickup from your hotel in Cairns, the Northern Beaches or Port Douglas, you’ll be driven in a comfortable coach to the Kuranda Skyrail and Kuranda Scenic Railway departure point. You’ll have your choice of taking the Skyrail in one direction and the Scenic Railway in the other direction, in the order that suits you.

On the Kuranda Skyrail, you’ll be amazed as you glide quietly just above the rainforest canopy in a comfortable 6-person gondola. There are two stations en route where you can enjoy a short walk to an interpretive center and to lookouts with spectacular views of the rainforest, the Coral Sea and the Cairns Highlands. At the stops, rangers can answer any questions you may have about the region.
You’ll travel with extra comfort on the Kuranda Scenic Railway in Gold Class, which includes an ambiance-filled cedar car with lounge-style chairs, timber flooring and historical photographs. During the journey, your host will offer snacks and beverages including sparkling Australian wine, tea and coffee. You’ll also receive a Kuranda Scenic Railway gift pack with a badge, pen, postcard, postage and souvenir trip guide.

Rising from sea level to 1076 feet (328m), the journey to Kuranda passes through World Heritage-listed rainforest, skirting spectacular waterfalls and the awe-inspiring Barron Gorge. Upon arrival in the village of Kuranda, you’ll find a variety of attractions and shopping to explore for the day with ample free time.

Choose to browse the heritage markets; grab some food in one of the many restaurants or cafes (own expense); or see the wildlife at the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Birdworld, or Kuranda Koala Gardens (own expense). There are many options for you to do as much or as little as you like on your Kuranda day trip.

Upon return, your coach will transfer you to your accommodation.

The service was friendly, attentive but relaxed. Having the food and beverages made the trip so much better. I would have enjoyed it more in the afternoon I think and I would have been happy to spend more time in Kuranda.

This was a lovely day. Gold class on the scenic railway was just perfect and Vivian our on board hostess was just perfect. She pitched service and friendliness just right! Only criticism is too short a time to actually look around village and certainly no time to take on other attraction options. Transfer was excellent but we would hire a car next time so as to have longer there. All in all a very good day for those that may not want to drive themselves.

Not worth it, organized well but on your own the whole day and the town is really small. I had lunch and browsed and ready to go back after 2 hours. Railway: sat on the right so I saw nothing. Every bit of scenery is on the left. Seats are allocated so nothing you can do. Waste of money. How can you charge for a scenic rail when only one side of the train can see anything? Literally only one thing is on the right. Very strange, its unfair that i had to get up every five minutes on what was supposed to be a scenic journey. Gold class was nice, but again, waste of money.

Sky tram provided a great view and the train return provided great views on the return. This tour only provides transportation to and return from Kuranda. The day in Kuranda is on your own.

Opportunities to get up close with native wildlife. Take the gold class train up and go straight to the Koala park while everyone else is eating after they get off the train. Take the Skyrail back down for more flexibility in schedule. Would be 5-star if there was more coordination of what to do in Kuranda. Overall a great day with nice views.

When we were there the cyclone had caused mudslides so the train wasn't running. Viator reimbursed us for only doing the skyrail both ways - which was wonderful. Only complaint about this was we were the only people not picked up at the port - other tours were!? and we needed to get a taxi. The local tour operator was waiting for us at the Skyrail though!!

This was a great excursion! I do think the Gold Class was worth the price difference especially given the day we went the train had problems and we had quite a delay. There was plenty of time to visit the butterfly sanctuary which was quite lovely as well as shop in Kuranda for those interested. My grown sons chose to hike...some of the trail markers were not correct not well marked, though, so be aware you might end up with views you already had when the train stopped. Don't just go to the GBR when in Cairns area...do take this train ride and visit the village of Kuranda.
