About this activity
Your tour starts just after midday with pickup from your accommodation in Cairns. Traveling north, you will pass through sugarcane farmlands with the Kuranda Rage as a picturesque backdrop. At Tjapukai, you can explore the rich history of Australian Indigenous culture and learn first-hand from experts on how to perform traditional skills.
Begin with an Indigenous Guided Bush Food Trail. This personalised tour will take you on a journey through the Tjapukai Parklands to show you bush foods, plants and trees that have culinary and medicinal significance. At the end of journey enjoy billy tea and damper with native fruit jams, as you relax by the lake and enjoy insightful talk with your guide.
Join a 21/2 hour guided tour to witness the Dreamtime Story or the story of creation through live performance. Learn first hand from a warrior about traditional hunting methods and tribal law. Throw a spear with the help of a traditional milay spear thrower and learn the art of throwing a returning boomerang. Listen to a didgeridoo, and be tantalised by the smell of the meat being unearthed from the Bayngga underground oven and enjoy a delicious taste test.
Have some free time to check art displays and the gift shop which has quality indigenous souvenirs before the journey back to Cairns, where your tour ends in the late-afternoon.
