About this activity
6-8 hours are enough to cover the main attractions of the city of Cairo. Start your day tour with a visit to the Egyptian museum in an air-conditioned vehicle. Your Egyptologist guide will give you an introduction of this massive place. The museum, which was opened in 1901, houses thousands of monuments and artifacts. You will be overwhelmed by what you see around you: statues of the great pharaohs, golden treasures, tools, royal mummies, animal mummies and much more. You will spend wonderful time moving among the treasures of king Tut Ankh Amun. Although, you need weeks and weeks to cover everything in this huge building, however, your guide will explain with passion the highlights and must-see pieces. Then you will enjoy free time to go and browse here and there.

Following this visit, you will next enjoy a visit to the Citadel of Saladin, a 12th century fortress that was built on a cliff of the highest mountain in Cairo, some the towers and gates of the fort still in situ.

Inside the citadel, you will go inside the mosque of Mohamed Ali known as the Alabaster mosque. Built in 1830, the mosque was designed by a Turkish architect, who followed the same style of the Blue mosque of Sultan Ahmed in Istanbul. Your Egyptologist will explain the main elements of the mosque and basic Islamic principles. Before leaving the citadel area; you will see a panoramic view of the whole city with its old and modern surroundings.

At the Coptic area, you will visit the Roman fortress of Babylon. The Romans built in the 1st century A.D; a very impressive church was built on the walls of one of the towers known as the Hanging church. Consecrated to Virgin Mary, the Hanging church was built in a basilica style. Let your eyes and feelings absorb the beauty of the wooden roof that resembles the Ark of Noah, the icons, the altars and the pulpit. Then carry on to Abu Serga or St Sergious church. It is also known as the cavern church as the holy family stayed in the cave underneath the church during the escape journey in Egypt, a short walk will lead you into Ben Ezra synagogue, the oldest Jewish temple in Cairo. There you will learn about the history and customs of the Jewish community in Egypt. The temple is famous for the Geniza:an archive of valuable and rare documents.
