About this activity
Introduction to your instructor(s). From Shunda Creek, drive approximately 40 km to the training location. At Kootnay Plains, you'll set up a base camp. You'll start by covering what precautions to take and dangers to avoid. Proper equipment and priorities during emergencies. You'll then move to how to make survival fires and shelters under adverse conditions. The emphasis of the course is on developing practical and useful bushcraft and overall outdoor skills. At night, there is the opportunity to sleep in your very own survival

Topics Covered During the Course:
• Being properly prepared in the outdoors (This includes clothing, gear, basic survival equipment, first aid, emergency signaling, general safety, hydration, cold/hypothermia, wild animals, and other dangers.)
• Understanding and evaluating risk with regards to the outdoors
• Knowing which are the correct priorities when encountering survival situations
• How to make survival fires under extreme conditions and its importance in survival situations (We cover different methods of making fire: matches, tinder, sap, flint, and bow.)
• Basic orienteering in the mountains and forest using maps , compass and GPS.
• How to build different survival shelter including choosing proper locations. Using improvised materials, shelter types, survival camping techniques and how to stay warm at night.
• Introduction to basic food sources and edible plants found in the mountains and boreal forests region (berries, shrubs, grasses, fungi, and plants with useful or medicinal purposes).
• Basic knife and hatchet/axe craft.
• Making and improvising basic snares and small game traps
• Review of useful knots for bushcraft and survival situations.
• Intro to making rope/cordage; building outdoor survival saws out of basic materials.

Instructors & Group Size:

All guides take part in extensive training programs, and each guide offers a unique set of skills. Instructors are fun and enthusiastic. They love to teach, be in the outdoors, and share their contagious enthusiasm with everyone.

Accommodation:

As the courses are focused around the outdoors, accommodation will be in the form of the highest quality four-season tents. The romantic atmosphere of a burning camp fire is central to what we do and meals are cooked around an open fire.
