About this activity
Come to the end of the day, it’s time to kick back and enjoy the freedom and serenity of the lake in the late afternoon light.
After fitting you with a life vest, running through a few safety instructions and a bit of practice with the pedal-drive system, we set off to quietly glide past sedges where the water birds dart in and out in search of food and shelter.
The exact route we follow depends on a bit of weather conditions that day and what you want to see. Your relaxing lake kayak cruise will normally include:
• Soaking up the grand vistas at the heart of Canberra – Parliament House and ANZAC Parade, the National Carillon on Aspen Island, lakeside sculptures, the imposing National Library, High Court buildings, Avenue of Flags
• Pulling up for a break at a lakeside beach and picnic table to enjoy some drinks and nibbles;
• Learning the story behind the colourful architecture and spiral sky loops of the National Museum of Australia;
• The freedom to meander, relax and soak up the late afternoon light dancing on the water with the setting sun behind distant mountain ranges
With your hands-free to record the serene moments on your camera our slow kayak cruise gives you time to enjoy the rhythm and freedom of the water.
About our kayaks:
Thanks to millions of years of penguin fin evolution and a few smart guys at Hobie, the kayak pedal-drive system (or Mirage drive as Hobie calls it) propels you through the water with ease – using your leg muscles, not your arms. Our kayaks also come with the new very comfy adjustable “Vantage” seats. Add in a very stable boat design, fingertip rudder control, dry hatches to store jumpers, cameras, phones… and kayaking was never made easier. It is hands-free, and the easiest way to get around on water with human power!

  • Bring adequate clothing for the conditions, especially to stay warm on colder days when out on the water. (Clothing can be stored in dry hatches on the kayaks). A hat (with chin strap to stay on if windy), some sunglasses, a dab of sunscreen, and a small water bottle are handy. Expect to get your feet wet, up to about shin height, getting in and out of the kayaks. If you require it we can lend you some special footwear for getting wet feet and you can store your shoes or sandals in the kayak dry hatch. If you bring your camera or phone on board the kayak, it’s best to attach a cord so you don’t accidently drop it over board and watch it sink to the depths for the fish to figure out if they can use it.
