This beautiful Mayan Metropolis called ancient Chichen Itza is built mostly of limestone. Its culture has roots from the year 525 AD. The city of Chichen Itza is built in the middle of four main cenotes and these refer to the four cardinal points north, south, east and west.
In the center of Chichen is the temple of Kukulkán, this pyramid is constituted by 18 blocks of steps that represent the 18 months of the Mayan year, however the stairway is formed by 91 steps and the pyramid has 4 at each end thus giving a total of 364 steps that adding the main step gives a total of 365 steps or 365 days of the year, however it is not the only impressive.
The Kukulkan pyramid is built on a main cavern cenote and in turn there is a smaller pyramid under the kukulkan. It is in the main room has a statue of a reddish jaguar with jade eyes and in front of it is a ceremonial statue of the god Chak Mul.

Apparently the blissful cenotes not only shelter crystalline water to amazing depths but also were a place where the ancient Mayans did purification rituals or sacrifices, this because they believed it was a link or portal with the underworld, hundreds have been found of bones of humans and animals in the depths of some of them and with them offerings of clay and bags.
