About this activity

Climb aboard the boat and get ready as you speed across the waters of the Mexican Caribbean. The captain will be on the look out all the way for any signs of the whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea, as you travel in a small group to the deeper waters.

Once the whale sharks have been located and you are kitted out with the snorkelling equipment, the boat will stop at a distance and you will jump into the water two at a time, accompanied by the guide, to swim alongside these fascinating creatures which can be up to 10 metres long and weigh up to 15 tonnes! Watch through your snorkel in admiration as they swim gracefully through the water, marvel at their immense size and observe their gaping mouths. Worry not- they feed exclusively on plankton and particles in the water!

You will take turns to get off the boat in pairs and swim near the whale sharks, accompanied at all times by your guide. After the swim you will head to one of the beautiful beaches at the north side of Isla Mujeres to relax and sunbathe with a refreshing drink and enjoy lunch before heading back. A once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Wear beach clothing over swimsuit, sunglasses and cap or hat. Bring your camera, towel, a change of clothes and cash for dock tax, fee to the protected natural area, souvenirs, photos, tips or additional expenses. Due to this activity is carried out in open sea waters, the participants must be good swimmers. Groups of maximum 10 participants per boat. Please avoid the use of chemical substances, such as sunscreen, cream, makeup, etc. Be advised that Mexican law prohibits: Swim with whale sharks without a lifejacket or flotation device. All swimmers must remain at least 6 feet away from whale sharks, and are not allowed to touch or hold them at all. It is important not to interfere with their movements by placing yourself in front of them and avoid making any sudden movements in their presence. Whale sharks are endangered species, so it is mandatory to comply with these rules.
