Cape Town Whale Watching with Cape Point
1 day
About this activity
Every year between June and November, the Southern Right Whales come north and visit the South African Coast to mate and give birth. These amazing creatures will humble as well as entertain you.
This tour will allow you to get within 50 meters of these large animals. Your tour includes a 2.5-hour cruise on the only boat in False Bay licenced to approach whales within 50 meters.
But to the beginning...
Our knowledgeable tour guide will collect you from your accommodation in and around the Cape Town CBD in our luxury air-conditioned tour bus. Our pickups are at a reasonable time between 8:30 and 9:30.
Our route to the whale watching boat in Simon's Town takes us down the Eastern side of the Table Mountain National Park.
The first seaside village we encounter will be Muizenberg. This village was the holiday village for the rich and famous at the end of the 19th Century. Cecil John Rhodes seaside cottage is now a museum.
Our journey continues along Boyes Drive with amazing views of False Bay. At the village of Kalk Bay with its small community fishing harbour, we meet up with the railway line that runs along the coast, just above the high watermark, all the way to Simon's Town.
Simon's Town is home to the South African navy. It has been the centre of naval traditions since the 1700's. Today the main road is a mix of Georgian and Victorian buildings. We meet the whale watching boat at the town pier. ( Entry included)
After a welcome briefing, we head to sea. The main focus of our trip is the Southern Right Whale but we might also see Humpback and Bryde's whales. Sightings of dolphins are fairly common as well as Cape fur seals and the occasional great white shark. There is an amazing variety of bird life that can only be seen at sea.
On our return, we have some free time for you to grab something to eat from the many restaurants on the Simon's Town quayside. (Own Account)
The next stop on the tour the tour is Boulders Penguin colony.(For own account) The colony at boulders beach has been increasing for several years now. The African penguin colony is live 'soap opera". Just watching these little guys in their "tuxedos" will allow you to imagine many different stories.
From Boulders, we head off to the Cape of Good Hope at Cape Point nature reserve. (Entry Included) Enroute we will pass by Millers Point, once of the whaling stations at the turn of the 19th century. There are also many look points for whales in False Bay.
From the southwestern point of Africa, we will make our way back to Cape Town along the Atlantic coast. We will see the quaint fishing harbour of Hout Bay, drive down scenic Victoria Drive and maybe stop for the sunset in Camps Bay before dropping you back at your accommodation.
Please note this tour is subject weather and logistics related to the whaleboat.
