Cederberg 3-Day Donkey Cart Trail

The majestic & rugged Cederberg Mountains are a gigantic mass of sandstone, richly coloured by iron oxides and eroded into a variety of strange shapes. This 100-km long mountain range rises splendidly above the vineyards and citrus groves of the Olifants River valley. The Cederberg is most famous for these unique rock formations as well as for fine examples of San (Bushmen) rock paintings.

Day 1

Wupperthal Mission Village Guided Walking Tour - visit the old Moravian church and the shoe factory where "velskoene" hand-made leather shoes are manufactured by hand and shop showcasing all the different colours, designs and sizes. A museum will be visited and some time to do some sightseeing around the village. Overnight in tented accommodation on a dinner, bed, breakfast and packed lunch basis.

Day 2

Beginning of the 17km donkey cart track up to the village of Heuningvlei and all the surrounding villages. Plenty of time to stop for sightseeing, photographs and having a picnic lunch. Route will take 4-5 hours to complete. Overnight at Heuningvlei Backpackers Guest Lodge on a dinner, bed, breakfast and packed lunch basis in one of their community guesthouses.

 Day 3

This morning after breakfast, you take the 12km donkey cart track to the top of Pakhuis Pass where you will be collected and transferred back to Clanwilliam for your return home. This track can be very rough, and you are more than welcome to walk some of the way. Cushions will be supplied to soften the bumpy road, but this is all part of the fun! Most of the hiking and walking on the Cederberg Heritage Route trails is not very severe, though the paths are usually stony and uneven and occasionally the route goes through the veld with no path.

ABOUT THE TRAIL:

The mountain scenery on the route is spectacular and there are usually a variety of flowering plants to be seen along the way. There are also numerous streams and rivers to be crossed, which may involve taking off shoes and socks and wading.
