Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Rhodes Drive Newlands, Newlands 7735 South Africa
Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden is proof that not all gardens were created equal. Go on, pay it a visit. You can thank us later.
It’s a favourite among locals amd visitors alike for many reasons: picnics on the lawns, hiking up Skeleton Gorge, enjoying a glass of chilled Chardonnay before a summer sunset concert, exploring the many shady trails, and taking in the panoramic views from the canopy walkway, to mention just a few. Regarded as one of the great botanic gardens of the world, Kirstenbosch—or rather, the land on which it sits—was bequeathed to the government by Cecil John Rhodes. At the time, it was nothing more than ramshackle farmland overrun with pigs. In 1913 a botanist called Harold Pearson set about transforming the land into a botanic garden devoted to the country’s indigenous flora. It now contains over 7000 species of plants from southern Africa. Spend a few hours here to relax and unwind, have some lunch and bask in the African sunshine.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Bo-kaap, Cape Town Central South Africa
Visiting the colorful houses of the Bo-Kaap is always an otherworldly experience, captivating the vibrant essence of this Mother City. Save room in your stomach for a tantalizing Traditional Cape Malay Curry.
Duration: 15 minutes
Stop At: Iziko Slave Lodge, Corner of Adderley and Wale Streets, Cape Town Central 8000 South Africa
The Slave Lodge is one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town. The building has answered to many names in the last three centuries, namely; Slave Lodge, Government Offices Building, Old Supreme Court, and SA Cultural History Museum. All these names reflect the long and rich history of the building. In 1998 this museum was renamed the Slave Lodge. Under the umbrella theme, ‘From human wrongs to human rights”. Exhibitions on the lower level of this museum explore the long history of slavery in South Africa. Through our changing, temporary exhibitions we address issues around and we raise human rights awareness.
Duration: 45 minutes
Stop At: District Six Museum, 25A Buitenkant Street, Cape Town Central 8001 South Africa
District Six before its destruction under Apartheid, was a community representative of diversity on a number of levels – language, religion, economic class, geographical area of origin – and became a living example of how diversity could a be a strengthening characteristic of a community and need not be feared. It was a vibrant community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, labourers and immigrants, with close links to the city and the port. It represented the polar opposite of what the Apartheid government, inaugurated by the National Party coming into power in 1948, needed people to believe and internalize. We visit the museum of district six to pay homage and take note of the great historical struggles and significance behind the South African district.
