About this activity
Visit: The Springbok Experience Rugby Museum, Cape Town Central, Western Cape

A must-see for rugby fans, the Springbok Experience Rugby Museum is a world-class, modern interactive museum of local rugby history that’s designed to entertain the whole family. The experience tells the history of South African rugby with trophies, jerseys, boots and other memorabilia. The highlight is the interactive ‘Springbok Trials’ game zone, challenging kids and adults to test their skills in kicking, passing and more. The museum also serves as the national home for the Currie Cup and SA Cup trophies, which are a highlight for rugby fans to see in person. And it’s not just fans that filter through this museum. In fact, it’s not uncommon to come face-to-face with some of the high-profile figures from the rugby world paying homage to the sport at the museum.
History
From 1984, during apartheid, South Africa was banned from taking part in international rugby competition. When apartheid was abolished, the Springboks were readmitted and the team went on to participate in the 1995 Rugby World Cup. The team went on to win the world cup final versus New Zealand team. In an iconic moment known well to nearly all South Africans, newly elected President Nelson Mandela, wearing a green and gold Springbok jersey, presented the William Ellis Cup to white Afrikaans Captain Francois Pienaar.
Advice for visitors
The Springbok Experience is designed to excite even those who aren’t sports fans. While the games zones keep the athletic types busy, the audio-visuals at the museum will mesmerise the rest of the family. Be sure to experience the audio-visual exhibit of the evolution of rugby, created as a series of interactive digital displays that use sound, music, motion and touch-screen technology that’s sure to wow everyone.
