The village has been declared “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO in 2005 and was also one of the first free towns in the Americas. The village was created when African slaves fled from the spaniards into the wilderness, they created there own language by mixing Spanish, Portuguese and native African languages.
The village is really different from the rest of Colombia and really worth a visit as the culture experience you’ll get is something really unique as the guide take you from house to house for you to meet the local and to hear their stories.
