About this activity
Enjoy a private sightseeing day tour of Marrakech, exploring the medieval streets and enchanting gardens and palaces that make up this ancient city. Marrakech is possibly the most important of Morocco's four former imperial cities—cities that were built by Moroccan Berber empires.

You will view the late 19th century Bahia Palace and its expansive garden, built by the Grand Vizier of Marrakech. Then take a tour of the apartments of the Sultan’s favorite concubine and the Council Chamber, the only two sections open to the public. There you can admire the tiled walls and illuminated cedar wood ceiling. The beauty continues in the immaculate Central Courtyard, paved with marble and intricate zellij tiles.

Your tour guide will take you to The Jemaa el-Fnaa, one of the best-known squares in Africa and the city’s activity and trade center. It has been called the world-famous square and a bridge between the past and the present.

Finally, you will head to the Saâdian Tombs, dating back to the time of Sultan Ahmad al-Mansu. There you will witness the clean architectural lines and delicate decorations of cedar wood and stucco in the marble mausoleums where almost 60 members of the Saadi Dynasty lay.

We enjoyed our tour especially our visit to Jardin Majorelle. Our guide Salah explained everything, and he is also a good photographer :) . Thanks also to our very kind driver Redwan who drove us safely during our whole trip in Morocco.

The trip involved two 4 hour stretches of road travel. The driver did a very good job and was concerned with our comfort during the long tour. The guide was well versed with the city. One down side was an experience with a very aggressive rug salesperson. The market area was interesting, but was simply a larger version of the markets in other cities in Morocco.

We were picked up by an exceedingly nice driver promptly at / before 7:30 a.m. at our hotel. He spoke plenty of English, but was more comfortable in French. He provided us with bottled water and offered to accommodate anything we needed. Comfortable car. We stopped at a rest stop with a small restaurant / convenience store about halfway to Marrakech. There we (including our driver whom we treated) each got a pastry and coffee / tea. Nice restrooms (no tip expected). On arrival in Marrakech we met up with a wonderful tour guide who was quite knowledgeable of the history of each location. The website warned we would have to pay for admission to a couple sites and we paid 70 dirham each (about $7 - 8 USD at the exchange rate of the time) to enter a Mausoleum grounds and later a palace of sorts. At the entrance to one location, a man dressed in traditional water-seller (?) attire invited us to take his photo. We did so and our guide helped us give him a 10 dirham tip for that service. Next we went to lunch at a superb restaurant that provided a delicious multi-course meal while live music quietly played in the background. (Vegetarian option available.) That costs us maybe $70 USD for the two of us plus the meal of our tour guide. After lunch we walked through the old city past numerous stalls selling items. We were escorted into a large carpet showroom where a very nice salesman had his staff show us many many locally made carpets. They were gorgeous, although it was a tad uncomfortable how desperate the salesman was for us to buy one. Hundreds of dollars was not in our budget and we really disappointed him. The sweet mint tea was yummy there. Next we were taken to a shop selling various herbs , spices and argon oil products. We had a demonstration of their items and then were invited to make purchases, which we did. At the end of this great tour, as we'd previously arranged, we were dropped off at our Marrakech hotel instead of returning to Casablanca. This worked out nicely as our transportation between the two cities.
