About this activity
Meet your local guide at 10 am in front of the Naval museum (Firkas Fortress) on the west side of the Old Port and then set off on your 3 hour walking tour to discover the core of the town's multicultural character.
We will explore all different neighborhoods of the Old Town starting by the area of Topanas were we shall visit historical buildings that date back to the Venetian time and which have now been transformed to charming boutique hotels.
Under the shade of the bougainvillea plants we will stroll through little streets with bombarded Ottoman bathhouses, Latin inscriptions, an orthodox church turned into a mosque, each place representing a pebble on the mosaic of Chania town's historic past.
The Jewish synagogue, the Catholic church, the Orthodox church, the mosque are all located very close to each other showing the town's multicultural character.
We shall then head towards the boot-makers' and knife-makers' shops before we get to the ''agora'' (municipal market) were we will meet some of the friendly traders and sample their ''raki'' (local spirit) and delicious goat cheeses.
We will continue walking through the hidden streets of the neighborhood of Splatzia with its underground cisterns and relax having Greek coffee in a traditional "kafenion'' (coffee shop) in front of the church with the symbols of two religions.
Finally we will end up at the east side of the Old harbour so we have the chance to walk along the port towards our starting point and see the Venetian dockyards and visit the Grand Arsenal that usually hosts very interesting exhibitions. Last but not least we shall finish our tour in front of the Mosque, the oldest Turkish building on Crete, a fitting finale to this alternative walking tour of Chania's Old Harbour.
