About this activity
Our venture starts with the Bus pick-up very early in the morning and the first stop will be at Omalos Plateau at an altitude of 1100m, where you can have breakfast and then enter the Gorge.
The hike begins from Xiloskalo, where we enter the 18km long Gorge of Samaria. The passage follows the route of the ancient river Taras. During the walk, you can admire the caves that protected the Cretans in war times, creating a natural shelter which now has been embedded and accepted by mother nature, creating a natural habitat of the well-known, as well as endangered species Kri-Kri (wild goats). You will discover Herbs and Plants, many of which are growing only on Crete. Halfway, you walk through the abandoned village of Samaria and the Church of Osia Maria reaching the Iron Gates (Sideroportes), the most remarkable and narrow spot of the route with a height of 300 meters, but only a few meters of width, making even the bravest worry about walking through them. The approximate time for hiking through the Gorge will be 5,5 to 6 hours, depending on the hiking pace. Around 13:30 the hiking ends at the village of Agia Roumeli, offering you the chance to refresh with an invigorating dive at the inviting crystal clear waters of the Libyan Sea. A traditional lunch can be the closure of a very tiring but greatly rewarding and gratifying experience that Cretan nature brings to those who spend time to appreciate its gifts.
At around 17:15 departs the boat to Sougia and from there the bus will bring you back to Chania, around 20:00 pm. The drop off to other areas than Chania will be later on.
