Crete Wine and Olive Oil Tour

1 day
About this activity
Today we will travel through wonderful nature’ s landscapes. Up to the mountains of Kisamos region, we will learn about the wine varieties of the traditional family winery, established in 1993, with specialized knowledge on winemaking and fresh ideas for modern processes of farming and wine production. We will sit between the olive trees, smelling the blossoms, diving deep into the nature’ s miracle, tasting awarded local ‘’Vidiano’’, ‘’Muscat of Spinas’’, and some international varieties like ‘’Grenache Rouge’’, ‘’Syrah’’, ‘’Mouverde’’, that earn a special taste because of the local Terroir.

An incredible taste stays on our palate while we leave the winery, heading through an extraordinary path to traditional Cretan villages. In the winter time we smell the humid lands and the air whispering the winter’s songs, but in the summer time we enjoy watching the blooming vegetation and hearing the birds singing. Then we will visit an old village and the museum of the oldest olive tree in the world, estimated at 3,5000 years old. The miracle of nature stands proud in front of us and its deep roots hold it through the ages.

This is a day full of wine tasting different expressions of those noble grapes, and delicious food tasting. We continue our journey heading to a beautiful winery in Kisamos region. We will taste a special local blended white wine with ‘’Vilana’’, ‘’Vidiano’’ and ‘’Assirtiko’’ varieties and we will walk through the vineyards into an idyllic landscape. Also we will visit the olive oil factory that the family possesses and learn about the extra virgin olive oil production. The wine tasting accompanied with extra virgin olive oil and local pure products is a combination that your palate will never forget. Now we will see the Cretan way to say goodbye, drinking the awarded ‘’Tsikoudia’’.

This tour ended way too quickly but I'll remember it for a long time to come. Our driver Giannis was very knowledgeable and proud to share insights into both the history and food heritage of the island. All the places we visited had a very traditional atmosphere and it was evident that they take utmost pride in their products from seed to bottle. A perfect way to access wine and olive oil of the best quality, while having a glimpse into the production of these Cretan staples.

Brilliant tour. Couldn't have had a better, friendlier guide. Yanis's knowledge of the area and it's history was worth the trip on its own. Both vineyards and olive oil tours were excellent with quality tastings. Would do it again. Worth every penny.

This tour was a 5 STAR EXPERIENCE!! Dimitrios from GS Tours was exceptional! Dimitrois greeted us as soon as we got off the cruise ship and was very friendly. It was a 7 hour tour and from start to finish we felt like we were VIP's and family. He told us so much about the things we were seeing and when just driving to our next destination, he would talk to you about the country and interesting things you might want to know. He welcomed questions and we learned so much. We travel alot and have experienced tour guides that are NOT good and never talk except when they absolutely have to and you never learn anything about the country or place you are visiting. We visited the most beautiful monastery where they make their own organic wine and extra virgin olive oil. We visited on a Sunday so we were very fortunate to actually witness the service taking place. We received a wine tour and how they make their olive oil. The grounds were so beautiful and for miles all you can see are their own olive trees. Afterwards we were taken to a actual room that dates back to 5th century where we were able to sit down and try 4 different wines and their different varieties of extra virgin olive oil along with their homemade bread. I never tasted olive oil so incredible in my whole life. I could have eaten a whole loaf of bread with that olive oil. They also have a store there, so you can purchase it and it is VERY reasonable around 4.00 for a bottle that would cost over 25 back home in Alabama. He then took us to a famous cemetery with a lot of history, to the center of town and visited the lighthouse and even let us stop at a local restaurant for a authentic gyro which we wanted to try since we were in Greece. We went on the most beautiful drive to the top of the mountain to another famous winery and they also make extra virgin olive oil that they sell all over the world. They sell out every year since it is in such tremendous demand! We were given 4 wine samples to try along with snacks that were freshly made for us. We were also able to have the different varieties of extra virgin olive oil they make. He took us to so many places along the way that he thought we would like to see also. We take 3 cruises a year and average over 15 excursions on them all. We had experienced a lot and this is a MUST DO AND SEE!! I have never been so pleased and enjoyed such an amazing day and it was all due to our tour guide Dimitrois. We arrived back to the ship exactly when we were supposed to. When and if we visit this port again, I will definitely take this tour again and look so forward to doing so. Dimitrois is standing in the picture pointing out a special variety of olive tree. I never knew there were different kinds. I feel I made a friend for life and am a better person for experiencing the kindness shown to me and my husband on this amazing tour!!
