About this activity
Travelers may check in at the Old Brick Barn on Guignard Street, or can just look for the green carriage in line on Market Street. When it is time for the tour to begin, you will be picked up by a clean, sturdy, and comfortable carriage being pulled by beautiful Percheron draft horses. All carriages are covered, so you won't have to worry about getting too much sun.

Once everyone is on board, the tour will begin in the Historic Charleston City Market and will then cover about 20 to 30 blocks of the residential historic district. The main difference between the carriages is the experience of your tour guide, and at Classic Carriage the guides have an average of over 12 years of experience giving the Civil War tour.

The tour will give you a better understanding of the events that many locals refer to simply as the War, covering such events as the signing of the Ordinance of Secession, the firing on the "Star of the West", the Battle of Fort Sumtera and the devastating fire of 1861. The heroic actions of Robert Smalls, the charge of the 54th Massachusetts on Battery Wagner, the bombardment of the city by Union artillery, the tragic fate of the "H. L. Hunley", and the destructive march of William Tecumseh Sherman through the Carolinas will also be remembered.

Union forces spent years trying to break through Charleston's defenses, by land, and by sea, resulting in the longest sustained campaign of the Civil War, and the longest siege in American history.

The tour will end at the Old Brick Barn on Guignard Street, the oldest active stable in the city of Charleston. You are welcome to explore the barn after the tour, and you can even say hello to your horse while he gets his water break. There really is no better way to experience Charleston.

Ginger was great and Jackson was a perfect host as well. As we knew a lot about Charleston history Ginger was accurate and entertaining. We also liked her relationship with Jackson. No whip or coaching needed, Ginger simply suggested what he need to do and was affectionate. We are obviously animal lovers as well. Good job Ginger, we thought the world of you and enjoyed the tour thanks to you......and Jackson.
