About this activity
To begin your tour, you will meet your guide at the Chattanooga Visitor Center, located at 215 Broad Street, Chattanooga, TN 37402. We will then begin the 90 minute walking tour, exploring Downtown Chattanooga's City Center and Riverfront. Our route takes us down Broad Street and up Market Street, throughout the heart of Downtown Chattanooga, ending right back where we began at the Chattanooga Visitor Center.
On the tour, you will:
  • Learn about Underground Chattanooga and the city's rich Civil War history.
  • See The Read House Hotel, the site of the former Crutchfield House Hotel and site of a "near duel" between the hotel's owner, William Crutchfield and Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy on the eve of the Civil War.
  • Hear the fascinating story of Union Depot.
  • Explore the Riverfront and Ross's Landing
  • Enjoy beautiful views of the Tennessee River and see firsthand why Chattanooga is known as both The Scenic City and The River City.
  • Pay homage to the Cherokee at "The Passage"- a beautiful monument marking the site where the Cherokee began their 1,000 mile march from Tennessee to Oklahoma on what became known as The Trail of Tears.
  • View early 20th century buildings built by the city's master architect, R.H. Hunt.
  • Learn about the history of the Moon Pie as we pass by the Moon Pie General Store.
  • Enjoy watching artisans at Ignis Glass Studio blow beautiful glass creations by hand.
  • Learn about "the wickedest woman" in Chattanooga's history.
  • See the Tivoli Theatre, the first air-conditioned public building in the South, and the oldest church in Chattanooga, Second Presbyterian Church, founded in 1871 by a former Union arm y chaplain.
  • Hear the fascinating story of Chattanooga's history with the Coca-Cola Bottling Company.
  • Learn about Chattanooga's connection with the New York Times and the "gold dome building."
  • Additional sites include: The Tennessee Aquarium, Southern Belle Riverboat, Police Memorial, Cameron Hill, Miller Plaza, Market Street Bridge, High Point Climbing Gym and more.
