About this activity
After meeting your private guide at your Chengdu hotel, set off on your full-day sightseeing tour of the city's historical, cultural and natural landmarks that you've selected. Depending on your itinerary, you’ll either walk or travel by taxi, metro or public bus.
For lunch, your guide will recommend a nearby restaurant wherever you are at the time. Feel free to adjust your sightseeing route at any point during the day if you find you want to spend more time at a certain place. You set the pace of your tour and decide how much you’d like to do in one day. At the end of the day, your guide returns you to your hotel.
If you want to focus your tour on city attractions, your guide can take you to key monuments such as Wenshu Yuan Monastery or Wuhou Memorial Temple. Maybe marvel at the furry residents of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, located 45 minutes outside the city center, or stroll through the peaceful greenery of People’s Park and stop by a teahouse.
Check out the shopping options in Chengdu by heading to the massive New Century Global Center (reputed to be the world's biggest building), Chunxi Road shopping district or any number of local markets. Sample hot pot in the city where it was invented, or try some tasty street food.
Outside of Chengdu, you can travel to Luodai, Qingcheng Mountain, Huanglongxi Ancient Town or the Leshan Buddha. At Mt Mengding (Mengdingshan), learn all about tea production at a working tea plantation. Or find out what the archaeologists have discovered at Jinsha Site Museum and Sanxingdui Museum.

- If you select the option that does not include lunch, the guide will recommend a good local restaurant where you can have lunch at your own expense

This will go down as one of my favourite days spent in China, which was as much to do with my fantastic guide, Penny, as it was about the experiences. I chose to go to the Leshan Buddha and also to go try some local street food and hot pot. Prior to the tour date, Sam was very thorough in finding out what I was hoping to experience and tailoring my itinerary, including detailing realistic travel times and any additional costs high speed train to Leshan for instance is an additional expense, about 50rmb per person each way. I only did the boat trip at Leshan, would have loved to hike it but realistically that would've left no time for anything else back in Chengdu, it was a really spectacular sight and well worth visiting. Later, Penny showed me around a neighbourhood near one of the big universities, and recommended a number of interesting and delicious street foods before we went to the hot pot restaurant - I was keen to try some really spicy foods, and this is certainly the place for it, but there were many less spicy options available if I'd wanted. Throughout the day, Penny was simply outstanding both as a guide and as someone to spend the day with - it really felt like I was spending the day with a friend who happens to love Chengdu rather than just a typical tour guide. She provided a lot of insight about the places we visited as well as various other attractions in the city, in addition to being an engaging conversationalist and up for many a good laugh. I'd highly recommend this tour, not only because of how fortunate I was to get such a great guide, but because it really represents good value for such a flexible and customisable tour, and the pre-arrangements with Sam will ensure you get to have a well organised day out to suit your own needs.
