About this activity
Your driver will pick you up at your hotel in Chennai at 07:00 in the morning and drive you to the holy city of Kanchipuram (approximately 90 minutes).

Upon arrival, you will be visiting the most famous Shiva temple, the Ekambareswara where Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of Earth Linga. The temple complex covers 25 acres and is one of the largest in India. It houses four gateway towers known as gopurams. The tallest is the southern tower at 180 feet and 11 stories, which makes it one of the tallest temple towers in India.

Next, visit another temple dedicated to Shiva, the Kailasanathar. The temple was built by the Pallava Dynasty during the eighth century. The architecture of this temple resembles the shore temple at Mamallapuram. The walls of this temple are filled with great sculptures and paintings. There are 58 other small shrines situated around the main shrine. The center of attraction in Vishnu Kanchi is the temple of Varadarajaswamy situated on the top of Hastigiri or Elephant Hill. The sculptural beauty of the pillars is noteworthy. There are ornamental rings carved out of a single stone at the Four Corners of the mandapam in the form of a chain.

You will have some free time to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (at own expense).

After lunch, visit the town of Kancheepuram which is also known as Silk City since the main profession of the people is weaving silk sarees. The silk weavers settled here more than 400 years ago and have given it an enviable reputation as the producer of the best silk sarees in India. You will have the opportunity to admire and even buy a saree.

You will be driven back to your hotel in Chennai.
