Stop At: Guindy National Park, Rangeguindy, Chennai (Madras) 600025 India

Guindy National Park is a wildlife haven right in the middle of the chaos of Chennai! It is one of the few national parks situated inside a city. The park is home to the endangered Blackbuck and 14 other species of mammals like the Spotted Deer, Bonnet Macaque and Jackals. The park has over 150 species of birds, 9 species of amphibians, 60 species of spiders and 60 species of butterflies. Within the park there is also a children’s play area that has a collection of birds and animals. The Children’s Park also has a fossilized tree specimen that is about 20 million years old. The park remains closed on Tuesdays.

Stop At: Guindy Snake Park, Sardar Patel Road Nr. Guindy National Park, Chennai (Madras) India

The Snake Park is just adjacent to Guindy National Park. Here guests will get to meet 23 different species of snakes, 7 species of crocodiles, 3 species of turtles and 6 species of large Indian lizards. The snakes are housed in glass fronted enclosures that offer a close view of these deadly animals. Visit the Snake Venom Center where you can observe a demonstration of venom extraction which is used for making anti-venom vaccines.

Stop At: Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur, Chennai (Madras) 600048 India

Arignar Anna Zoological Gardens is India’s first public Zoo located in Vandalur. Spread over 600 acres this zoo is also the largest in India. There are more than 1500 wild species including 46 from the endangered list. Some of the highlights of this tour are the Butterfly House, a walk through Aviary, a Serpentarium, a Primate House and the World of Nocturnal Animals.

Crocodile Bank (2 hours)

The wildlife trail then takes you to Chennai Crocodile Bank. Set up by the renowned conservationist, Romulus Whitaker, it is an amazing experience. The park is home to more than 2 500 reptiles including Jaws III, its most famous resident and one of India’s largest saltwater crocodiles. It is the biggest crocodile sanctuary in India. It has been successful in breeding over 5 000 crocodiles and alligators that represent 14 of the 23 existing species native to India.
