5-Day Chiang Mai Hilltribe Experience

5 days
About this activity
DAY 1: Today you can arrive at any time before the welcome meeting tonight at 6.30pm. There are many things to do here in Chiang Mai - spectacular temples, delicious food, an enormous night market, a picturesque river-front so arrive a few days early. After the welcome meeting your evening is free.Your local guide will meet you again the next morning.
Day 2: Leave Chiang Mai around 8.45am with your local guide and head north approx 3 hours to Chiang Dao Caves, a set of five interconnected caves, thought to expand more than 12 kilometres into the mountain. The caves are among the most extensive in the county and are a popular pilgrimage spot for both monks and ordinary Thais. Have lunch near the cave entrance, then take a short drive to a village called Baan Huay Go, to the first 2-3 hours of the trek along an easy path, through agricultural farmland. Cross through bamboo forest, surrounded by a beautiful landscape of limestone mountains. Arrive at this evening’s destination, a Palong village called Baan Pang Daeng Nai. Around 58 families live in this self-sufficient economic village, strongly Buddhist people who migrated to Thailand in the early 1980s. Enjoy dinner cooked by your host, then take a walk around the village to interact with the locals. You’ll stay in a bamboo stilt house, surrounded by an organic vegetable farm, with shared facilities. Conditions are basic, but this is a truly unforgettable Intrepid experience!
Day 3: Fuel up on breakfast then maybe chat with local women and see the handicrafts that they sell – spending your money on community enterprises directly can help support community development. Say goodbye and begin today's walk, which will take around 4-5 hours. Make your way through agricultural land, jungle and climb a hill through bamboo forest. Enjoy a quick rest and admire the view across the beautiful scene of Chiang Dao below. Descend to a well deserved lunch. Continue your trek for another hour to the Village of Baan Pang Hor, your base for the night. Relax and rest your legs, then explore the village. Tonight you’ll enjoy a cultural treat – a Palong dance by the local children. You will stay in a bamboo stilt hut again tonight.
Day 4: Enjoy a natural animal wakeup call this morning, chat with the locals and discover more about their culture, then get some fuel on-board for today’s walk. Then it’s the start of your last day of trekking. Trek through farmland for the last 2 hours of the trek, before meeting your driver at the village of Baan Pang Dang Nok. Stop for lunch, then continue back to Chiang Mai, arriving around 3pm and checking into your hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore the city. Maybe head out for a final celebratory meal.
Day 5: This adventure comes to an end today. There are no activities planned for the final day and you are able to depart the accommodation at any time.

  • Travel insurance is compulsory. We require that, at a minimum, you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects.
  • Please keep your luggage to a minimum. One small soft-sided bag plus a day pack (no more than 15-20kgs in total per person) is essential. We recommend against bringing hard/externally framed suitcases as they are difficult to store and can damage equipment and other travellers' belongings. If your trip is beginning and ending at the same location, excess luggage can usually be stored at your arrival/departure hotel and can be collected after your trip.
  • DIETARY REQUIREMENTS: Please let us know your diet requirements before your trip starts.
  • Generally speaking, in bigger cities/towns vegetarians can expect a reasonable range of vegetarian venues and/or vegetarian options within tourist restaurant menus. However, vegetarianism is not the norm in this part of the world so options can be limited when eating at homestays, small local restaurants, street stalls, markets, etc. More restrictive diet requirements (vegans, celiac, gluten intolerance, fructose intolerance, lactose intolerance, etc.) can also be accommodated along this trip but you should expect a lesser variety than what you can expect at home. We recommend that, if possible, to bring your own supply of snacks with you.
  • CONTINGENCY FUNDS: We try to plan for every eventuality, but there are still some things beyond our control. Please make sure you have access to the equivalent of an extra US$500 for emergencies (e.g. severe weather, natural disasters, civil unrest) or other events that result in unavoidable changes to the itinerary (e.g. transport strikes or cancellations, airport closures). Sometimes these things necessitate last minute changes to enable our trips to continue to run, and as a result there may be some extra costs involved.
