By the end of the 20th century, the original Wat Rong Khun was in a bad state of repair. Funds were not available for renovation. Chalermchai Kositpipat, a local artist from Chiang Rai, decided to completely rebuild the temple and fund the project with his own money. To date, Chalermchai has spent THB40 million of his own money on the project.

Once you enter the Black House you will see an intact elephant skeleton, skulls of various creatures which cannot be fathomed at first sight in its raw bone form. Skins of bears, tigers, reptiles, cracked eggs, furniture made out of animal bones, various skulls and bones that are used to decorate the ornate buildings and many more carcasses of exotic animals.

Opium and heroin base produced in northeastern Myanmar are transported by horse and donkey caravans to refineries along the Thailand–Burma border for conversion to heroin and heroin base. Most of the finished products are shipped across the border into various towns in North Thailand and down to Bangkok for further distribution to international markets.
