About this activity
The capital of the Autonomous Territorial Unit is the first region to visit. Comrat is one of the largest cities in the south of Moldova, although it was founded by Trans-Danubian settlers not so long ago – at the end of the 18th century. There are few monuments of that period preserved. However, there are many monuments of the Tsarist period and in particular Soviet monuments.
We will stop at the Cathedral and the square opposite it. This place, as in most cities around the world, is the heart of the whole city. The Orthodox Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was built in 1840.
There is also the Museum of Local History in Comrat. Archaeological finds are the basis of its collection. The permanent exposition of the museum is dedicated to Gagauz history and culture.
Special attention should be paid to the Walk of Fame of the Gagauz people. The most outstanding personalities in the history of this relatively small nation are presented there.
Each city and town of Moldova has a monument to soldier-liberators, and Comrat is no exception. This monument is also included into our route list.
We will also see the local University, the House of Culture and the famous monument to Lenin.
Soon after this, we will head south and arrive in another Gagauz village – Beshalma. It should be noted that the villages of Gagauzia are famous for their sizes and the number of inhabitants. In addition, the village of Beshalma is known for its museum. The museum was founded on September 16, 1966 by the famous librarian D. Kara-Cioban. The Moldavian guidebook of 1974 said: Beshalma is the only museum of the Gagauz people in the world. In 1993, the village of Beshalma was introduced by UNESCO in its periodic bulletin as a unique center of Gagauz culture.
After you acquaint yourself with Gagauz culture and enjoy the clean air of the Moldovian hinterland, we will leave for another, the second most important town of Gagauzia. We are going to Ceadir-Lunga.
This town was also founded by the Trans-Danubian settlers after the end of the Russo-Turkish war. Among other things, there is an airport, which is by no means of international importance. It is abandoned. However, daily flights were made from Ceadir-Lunga during the Soviet period.
The local House of Culture and the monument to Mihail Ciachir are of particular interest. Mihail Ciachir was an outstanding person, a priest, who founded the first training school in the south of Bessarabia and was the first who translated the Bible into the Gagauz language.
The gilded monument to comrade Lenin is another example of the perception of history in a special way.
The city tour will end on a high note, both literally and figuratively. The Convent of St. Dmitry is a beautiful monastery, located on a hill, with a wonderful view of the city.
