About this activity
Day 1
Departure from Cluj at 8am, heading for Maramures. Positioned in North-Western part of Romania, in a mountain area, Maramures is a very special region, renowned for the living traditions, amazing haystacks landscape, colorful clothing, party music and wooden architecture. Stop on the way to visit the wooden church of Surdesti, the tallest of all eight wooden churches included in the UNESCO heritage list. Lunch with the locals in a traditional village. Continue with the visit of another UNESCO wooden church (Desesti or Budesti). Departure to Sapanta and visit the Merry Cemetery, an unusually colorful spot, unexpectedly reflecting the love for live of the locals, and a traditional dowry room. Dinner with the locals and accommodation a guesthouse.

Day 2
After breakfast, departure for Ukraine. Stop in Rakhiv on the spot where some used to say stands the geographical center of Europe. Continue the journey with the visit of Kolomeea Hutsul Easter painted eggs museum. Lunch in a restaurant. Arrive to Chernivtsi in late afternoon. Accommodation in a 4* hotel.

Day 3
Breakfast and departure for Podillya region. Meet a local guide and visit Khotyn medieval fortress, one of the main attractions in Chernivtsi area. Lunch in a restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the fortress and the museum-city of Kamianets-Podilskyi, part of UNESCO heritage and ranked as third in cultural importance in Ukraine after Kiev and Lviv. Get back to Chernivtsi in late afternoon.

Day 4
After breakfast, you shall meet the local guide for the Chernivtsi city tour. Ranking third in size within the Austrian Empire, after Vienna and Prague, Chernivtsi is intriguingly beautiful and mysterious. Visit Chernivtsi university (UNESCO heritage) and, time permitting, in the afternoon, do some shopping in the largest outdoor market in Ukraine. Departure for Bucovina. Dinner with the locals and accommodation in a rural guesthouse.

Day 5
After breakfast, visit the most complete and best preserved of the painted monasteries in Bucovina: Sucevita. If looking for spiritual perfection, you may find inspiration here, watching the Ladder of Virtues fresco scene. Continue with the painted monastery of Moldovita. Lunch on the way. Head for Voronet painted monastery to visit the most famous of all eight painted monasteries included in UNESCO heritage. Get back to Cluj in late afternoon. End of the tour.

  • May be operated by a multi-lingual guide.
  • A dress code is required to enter the monasteries. No shorts or sleeveless tops allowed. Knees and shoulders MUST be covered for both men and women. You may risk refused entry if you fail to comply with these dress requirements. Skirts and scarfs are usually offered at the entrance though.
  • Please advise any specific dietary requirements at time of booking.
  • Vegetarian option is available, please advise at time of booking if required.
  • A minimum of 2 people per booking is required. There is a possibility of cancellation after confirmation if there are not enough passengers to meet requirements. In the event of this occurring, you will be offered an alternative or full refund.
  • Passport name, number, expiry and country is required at time of booking for all participants.
  • A current valid passport is required on the day of travel.
  • Please check whether you need a visa for Ukraine. You MUST confirm and obtain any visa requirements prior to border crossing. All visa requirements are the sole responsibility of the traveler.
