Day 1: Cluj-Napoca - Maramures

Stop At: Surdesti Wooden Church, Surdesti Romania
Departure from Cluj at 8 am, heading for Maramures.

Stop on the way to visit the wooden church of Surdesti, the tallest of all eight wooden churches included in the UNESCO heritage list.
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Church of the Holy Paraskeva, Desesti 437135 Romania
Take a walk in the best preserved traditional village in Maramures and have lunch with the locals. Continue with the visit of another UNESCO wooden church (Desesti or Budesti).

Day 2: Maramures

Stop At: Merry Cemetery, Sapanta 437305 Romania
After breakfast, visit the Merry Cemetery in Sapanta, an unusually colorful spot, unexpectedly reflecting the love for live of the locals, and a traditional dowry room.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Memorial of the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance, Str. Corneliu Coposu No. 4, Sighetu Marmatiei 435500 Romania
Continue the journey with the visit of the Communist Resistance Memorial Museum in Sighetu Marmatiei.
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: The Wooden Churches of Maramures, Church on the Hill, Ieud 437170 Romania
Have lunch in a restaurant and visit some craftsmen and a third wooden church.

Day 3: Maramures - Bucovina

Stop At: Ciocanesti, Suceava Romania
Breakfast and departure for Bucovina, across the Carpathian Mountains. Stop in Ciocanesti to see the traditional decorated houses.

Lunch on the way in a restaurant.
Duration: 25 minutes

Stop At: Moldovita Monastery, Vatra Moldovitei 727595 Romania
Visit the painted monastery of Moldovita, famous for it’s Siege of Constantinople freco scene. As decorating the Easter egg is an ancient Hutsul tradition that you must not miss, you’ll have the chance to assist at such a demonstration.
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Sucevita Monastery, Dn17a 169, Sucevita 727510 Romania
Continue the journey with the visit of the most complete and best preserved of the painted monasteries: Sucevita. If you’re looking for spiritual perfection, you may find inspiration here, watching the Ladder of Virtues fresco scene.

Dinner and accommodation in a rural guesthouse.

Day 4: Bucovina - Cluj-Napoca

Stop At: Cacica Salt Mine, Cacica Romania
After breakfast, visit Cacica salt mine, in the heart of the Polish inhabited micro-region of Bucovina.
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Manastirea Voronet, Strada Voronet 166, Voronet 725301 Romania
Continue with the Voronet painted monastery, the most famous of all eight painted monasteries included in UNESCO heritage.

Get back to Cluj in late afternoon.

A dress code is required to enter the monasteries. No shorts or sleeveless tops allowed. Knees and shoulders MUST be covered for both men and women. You may risk refused entry if you fail to comply with these dress requirements. Skirts and scarfs are usually offered at the entrance though.
