Stop At: Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima, Rua de Rainha Santa Isabel 26, Fatima 2495-424 Portugal

Chapel of the Apparitions:

The pedestal, where the Image of Our Lady is located, marks the exact place where the small holm oak (disappeared due to the devotion of the first pilgrims who took it, a sprig of the sprig), a foot high, on which Our Senhora appeared to the shepherds on May 13, June, July, September and October of 1917. The construction of the Chapel was the answer to the request of Our Lady "I want you to make a chapel here in my honor".

Built on the site of the apparitions in 1919, from April 28 to June 15. The first Mass was celebrated there on October 13, 1921. Having been dynamited on March 6, 1922, it was rebuilt later that year.

In 1982 a large porch was built, and it was inaugurated during the visit of Pope John Paul II on May 12 of that year. In 1988, Marian Year, it was lined with pine wood, from Russia, northern Siberia. This wood was chosen for its durability and lightness. The original chapel, although subject to slight repairs over the years, retains the features of a popular hermitage.

Basilica of Our Lady of Fatima:

In 1928 the first stone of the Basilica of Fatima - designed by the Dutch architect G. Van Kriecken - was launched, which would have 15 altars dedicated to the many mysteries of the Rosary.

Sacred in 1953, the neo-baroque temple features a 65-meter bell tower, whose carillon has 62 bells. Also in the exterior we can find the image of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, while in the interior stands the main altar with a picture representative of the Message of Our Lady to the Shepherds. Also noteworthy for the Italian manufacturing body, dated 1952, built by 152 records and about 12,000 tubes. In the main chapel are buried the already deceased seers, Francisco, Jacinta Marto and Lucia.

Holy Trinity Church:

Located in the Sanctuary of Fatima, at the opposite end of the Basilica of Fatima, the Church of the Holy Trinity was inaugurated in 2007, but its construction was planned since 1973. In fact, already there was a need to build a new temple, since the Basilica was not sufficient to accommodate the great number of pilgrims who, on days of average attendance, intended to attend the liturgical celebrations in the Shrine.

The church is a modern building of circular shape and white color, the color of the stone that covers it, coming from this region and known as white of the sea. With 125 meters in diameter and without any intermediate supports, the imposing building has a volume of 130,000 m3 and capacity for 8,633 seats, and the interior can be divided into two sectors through a movable wall. To think of all there are also 76 places for people with motor difficulties.

The Greek architect Alexandros Tomazis signed this project which has interventions of several renowned names, such as the main door in bronze with 8 meters of height dedicated to Christ and created by Pedro Calapez, the tiles of the Galilee of the Apostles by Siza Vieira or the Cruz Alta of the German Robert Schad, in bronze with 34 meters of height, located outside the building.

Stop At: Batalha Monastery, Largo Infante Dom Henrique 2440, Batalha 2440-484 Portugal

Although known as the Battle Monastery, the correct designation of this monument is the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória. The truth is that both names refer to one of the most important moments in Portuguese history, a constant presence in the collective memory and textbooks, but also in legends such as Padeira de Aljubarrota.

The date, which many know by heart, is August 14, 1385. On that day, not far from where this imposing monument stands today, D. João, Master of Avis, defeated the Castilians in the Battle of Aljubarrota and saved the independence, threatened by a dynastic crisis. D. Fernando had died two years before, leaving as sole successor a daughter, married to the King of Castile, who claimed to be a legitimate heir to the throne.

A claim challenged by D. João, who, with the help of D. Nuno Alvares Pereira, would come to this day to fight the decisive battle to consolidate his rise to the throne. As proof of his gratitude to the Virgin Mary, whom he had asked to intercede with God, the new king decided to build a monastery by donating it to the Dominican Order.

Born of religious and patriotic fervor, and located about two kilometers from the place where the Castilians were defeated, the Monastery of Batalha would begin to be built a few years later. Its historical and monumental importance would be recognized by UNESCO, which awarded it in May 1983 the World Heritage of Humanity.

It is one of the most representative buildings of the Portuguese Gothic but, as its construction lasted for two centuries, was largely influenced by the Manueline, also having some renaissance appointments. The passing of the years and the fact that the works have been delivered to men of different tastes and ages makes this not a monument with a linear architecture but a mixture of various trends.

Stop At: Monastery of Alcobaca, Praca 25 de Abril, Alcobaca 2460-018 Portugal

In a region with several monuments classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the Monastery of Alcobaça has a prominent place, not only for its 900-year history, but also for being a notable example of Cistercian architecture, with the largest church in Primitive Gothic style built in Portugal during the Middle Ages.

The UNESCO classification was awarded in 1989, recognizing the importance of this monument, whose history is closely related to the History of Portugal and its first king, D. Afonso Henriques. April 8, 1153 is the date of the foundation of the Abbey of Santa Maria de Alcobaça and its Charter de Couto.

This donation of lands to the Order of Cister was a gratefulness of the monarch for the aid in the conquest of Santarém to the Moors. During this period, the conquest of territories to the south and the respective settlement were decisive for the consolidation of Portugal as a country.

The construction of the temple began in 1178, inspired by the abbey of Clairvaux (in France), headquarters of the Order of Cister. The Monastery of Alcobaça was thus built in a style which was called Primitive Gothic, which has its maximum exponent in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris.

However, speaking at the Monastery of Alcobaça is also about the greatest love story in the history of Portugal. The tragic passion of Dom Pedro and D. Inês de Castro is immortalized in that place. The tombs of the two lovers remember, since the fourteenth century, that love can be eternal. They were placed face to face, so that the two lovers may meet again on the Day of Resurrection.

Stop At: Obidos Village, Obidos Portugal

Close enough to the capital and situated on a high point near the Atlantic coast, Óbidos had a strategic importance in the territory. Already occupied before the Romans arrived in the Iberian Peninsula, the village became more prosperous from the moment it was chosen by the royal family. Since the king D. Dinis offered it to his wife D. Isabel, in the century. XIII, belonged to the House of the Queens who, throughout the various dynasties, benefited and enriched it. It is one of the main reasons for finding so many churches in this small town.

Within walls, we find a well-preserved castle and a labyrinth of streets and white houses that enchant those who walk there. Among Manueline porticoes, flowery windows and small ladders, there are several reasons to visit, good examples of the religious and civil architecture of the golden ages of the village.

The Mother Church of Santa Maria, the Church of Mercy, the Church of San Pedro, the Pelourinho and, outside of walls, the Aqueduct and the Sanctuary of the Lord Jesus of the Stone, of round plant, are some of the monuments that justify an attentive visit . As well as the Municipal Museum of Óbidos, where are the works of Josefa de Óbidos. It was, in the XVII, a reference painter and a woman with an irreverent artistic attitude in her time. His paintings reflect his learning with great masters of the time, such as the Spaniards Zurbarán and Francisco de Herrera, or the Portuguese André Reinoso and Baltazar Gomes Figueira, his father.

Another attraction is the famous Ginjinha de Óbidos, which can be enjoyed in several places, preferably in a chocolate chip.
