The Fatima Shrine Museum was founded in 1955. Through the permanent exhibitions of the Fatima Light and Peace Museum and Aljustrel House and Museum, and the temporary exhibitions, the Sanctuary of Fatima offers pilgrims and other visitors an interpretation by making recourse to the language of museology, to material witnesses related to the message of Fatima, to the development of the Shrine itself and to the spread of the Worship of Our Lady of Fatima in the World.

The three little shepherds were Lúcia dos Santos, with ten years at the time of the apparitions, and her maternal cousins Francisco Marto, at age eight, and Jacinta Marto, with seven years and both brothers. The children were born and they lived in the village of Aljustrel, pertaining to the parish of Fatima.
During the year 1916, the three shepherds witnessed three apparitions of an angel who identified himself as the "Angel of Peace" or "Angel of Portugal". They also affirmed that in 1917 they attended six apparitions of Our Lady, between May 13 and October 13. The complete account of these apparitions was only made public in 1937 by Lúcia, in the so-called Memoirs of Sister Lúcia I. The definitive text of the Angel's Prayers was later published in Memories of Sister Lúcia II, written in 1941.
