Itinerary

Day 1: Negombo- Sigiriya

Stop At: Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress, Main Road, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka
The rock has long attracted settlers. A community of reclusive monks lived in the caves around the base of the rock as far back as the 3rd century BC, though it was not until the 5th century AD that Sigiriya rose to sudden and spectacular prominence in Sri Lankan affairs. The patricidal King Kassapa chose the almost inaccessible summit as the unlikely setting for his new royal palace, a courtly paradise of elegant pavilions set amid gardens and pools. The rock was transformed into an immense recumbent lion by the addition of a brick-built head and foreparts, of which only the artfully sculpted paws remain. The impact of the Lion Rock, as it is called, must have been awesome since even its remnants beggar belief. Kassapa’s palace in the clouds lasted just 18 years, though its remains have drawn visitors ever since.

Stop At: Dambulla Royal Cave Temple, Kandy - Jaffna Highway, Dambulla 21100 Sri Lanka

It is home to the World’s most acclaimed Cave complex of magnificent Buddha Images and Rock Paintings of vivid colours and shapes constructed and painted from around the 2nd Century BC (Anuradhapura era) and continued up to the Kandyan era of the 18th Century, thus forming an unbroken line of history and painting styles of Sri Lanka through 2500 years.

Stop At: Kandy City Center, Kand, Kandy 20000 Sri Lanka
Kandy City Centre is Kandy's only big commercial mall. The mall looks pretty neat on the inside, better than Colombo's Majestic City or Crescat anyway, and it's got a lot of branded stores.

The entrance of the mall from Dalada Veediya is interesting given that you'd never guess it was a posh mall if you were passing by. It's disguised as a wide cottage-like building on this side, blending in with Kandy city's old architecture. Walk in and you're met with these three elephants, randomly standing guard next to the metal detector, before you enter the ground floor of the mall.
