The premises of the Temple of Tooth Relic in Kandy has been declared as the ‘World’s first-ever Eco Religious Site’. Respected by every Sri Lanka no matter what race or religion they are, it is one of the prime places of worship to the Buddhists. It holds the tooth relic which was brought from India and was kept close to the kings who ruled Sri Lanka until the final royal kingdom of Kandy. The tooth relic is honored every year in the month of August with a parade called the Esala Perahera.

The lake was created in 1807 by the last ruler of the kingdom of Kandy. The people initially objected to laboring on the lake project, but those who objected were ruthlessly put to death on stakes in the lake bed. The Kandy lake is probably the oldest man-made body of water in the country and perhaps in Asia. The lake itself was constructed by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe who despite being described as a tyrant- had an aesthetic sense.
