  • The Minneriya National Park has recently gained popularity after being featured on NatGeo for the largest congregation of wild elephants; dubbed, The Gathering. Visit between the months of July to October; where the season is dry, which draws more than 300 elephants to travel to the nearby Minneriya Tank in search of water. Besides elephants, the park is also home to crocodiles, purple-faced langur, painted stork and a plethora of colorful birds, both endemic and migratory. Embark on an exciting safari to watch Sri Lanka’s gentle giants in their natural habitat.

  • The Hurulu Forest Reserve in Sri Lanka is a thriving eco system with a variety of creatures. It was designated as a biosphere reserve in 1977. The forest reserve is a very important habitat of the Sri Lankan elephant. The animal is known for its migratory behavior and does so especially in the dry season between the forests situated around the area. The Hurulu forest reserve represents the dry-zone dry evergreen forests Sri Lanka. There are many other protected areas situated around Hurulu Forest Reserve. Ritigala strict nature reserve, Minneriya-Girithale and Mahaweli flood plains nature reserves. There is no record of the number of people who live in this forest reserve. Cultivation is their main means of living. In Recent times the expansion of human settlements and forest clearance have resulted in a human–elephant clashes. Translocation is the conventional solution taken to solve the issue.

  • Visit Dambulla Cave Temple
  • Dambulla Cave Temple is also quite commonly referred to as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, owing to the large, golden statue of Lord Buddha. Towering 160m in height, ascend the stone steps until you reach the summit, where approximately 153 statues of Buddha are held inside the caves. You’ll also find statues of gods, goddesses and local kings. The cave temple has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Sigiriya is one of the most popular, historic towns in Sri Lanka. Sigiriya is famed for its dramatic Sigiriya Rock Fortress built by a parricidal king who dreamed of building his palace in the sky and his kingdom around it. The immaculately designed, advanced water gardens, the beautiful frescoes of deities adorning the rock face and the stunning panoramic view from the peak are some of the main attractions at Sigiriya Rock.

  • The last ancient capital ruled by the kings, the city of Kandy is nestled between lush mountains. Considered as the cultural capital of the island, the city is also protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. Home to the most religious temple in Sri Lanka, the Sri Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, it attracts worshippers and tourists from around the world. Right above the stunning temple and palace complex, is a forest looming over the city, thriving with monkeys and wild animals and devoid of any sound from the bustling city below, the Udawatte Kele is sight to behold! Kandy is also the best place for immersing yourself in the island’s rich culture and heritage, while being surrounded by nature.
  • Temple of the tooth and museum
  • The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa is a sacred place of worship for Buddhists as it is believed to hold the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha. The city is believed to have been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, mostly due to the significance of the temple. The temple was built within the complex of the royal palace, as it was believed that whoever holds the sacred tooth relic has to hold the governance of the country.
  • Inner Museum
  • The inner museum located behind the temple grounds and adjacent to the palace complex, features a collection of artefacts, statues and images donated from around the world. Another museum dedicated to the Raja the Elephant, the first tusker who paraded the streets while holding that tooth.
  • Royal palace
  • Situated right next to the sacred temple of the tooth, the Royal Palace was the official residence of the last king of Kandy. It is believed that the only reason the temple and palace is located within the same complex is because whoever had the right to govern the country should hold hold the relic for safe keeping.
  • Kandy Lake
  • Kandy Lake ushers in cool winds from the surrounding mountains to the busy streets. This man - made lake is built right opposite the temple complex. It was said that the king built this lake with a secret tunnel that passes through the palace. You can walk around the lake or enjoy a scenic boat ride from one end to the other.
  • Embekke
  • Embekke Devalaya is most known for the stunning woodcarvings, pillars and various other structures located within the premises. The temple was built in the year 1370 and was believed to have been built by the Queen and a drummer from the village. Admire the intricate wood carvings in the main halls and the temple as you explore the wondrous aspects of this temple.
  • Lankathilaka
  • Constructed as a four storey building, Lankathilaka temple stands at eighty feet high on an uneven rock overlooking the Hantane Mountain Range. Dating back to 1344 AD when King Buwanekabahu IV built the temple, was dedicated to the worship of the Buddha and other
  • deities including Vishnu, Vibhishana, Kumara Banadara, and Saman.
  • Gadaladeniya
  • With a history dating back to the 14th century, Gadaladeniya Vihara is one of the largest, ancient rock temples in Sri Lanka. This old monastery was built over a rock in Diggala, Kandy by King Buwanekabaghu the fourth. The main shrine holds a single statue of the Buddha.
  • Royal Botanical gardens, Peradeniya
  • The Royal Botanical gardens in Peradeniya were once believed to be used as a secret, private garden for the royal family. However, following the end of monarchial rule, the gardens were open to the public and now display well manicured lawns, towering trees and shaded pathways.   • Kandy Esala Perahera (Only during 10 days in July / August)
  • The Kandy Esala Perahera is a festival of lights and traditional dancing in order to commemorate the sacred tooth relic. This event occurs from the month of July until August. The tooth relic is paraded on the streets of Kandy to celebrate Lord Buddha’s presence in the country. Fire breathers, traditional dancers, drummers, musicians and many more are a part of this town’s most significant event.
  • International Buddhist museum
  • The International Buddhist Museum is the world’s first international Buddhist Museum. Located next to the National Museum of Kandy and the Sri Dalada Maligawa. The museum was built based on the contributions made by China, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos,
  • Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Depal and Pakistan.
  • Ella
  • The small hill town of Ella has gained popularity over recent times thanks to its stunning vistas and jaw dropping mountain silhouettes. Hiking and trekking to some of the most beautiful view points are a popular pastime here. Mountains such as Worlds End, Ella Rock and Little Adam’s Peak are a few of most popular names in the town. There are several small accommodation types to cater to the travellers that venture here. Ella can be accessed via train, car or bus. Weather in Ella is mostly great, as it’s cool in the mornings and evenings, and gets hot by midday. December brings about plenty of rain, which makes it difficult to trek and hike to the mountains.

  • The famous Nine Arches Bridge has made it to almost every Instagram feed of explorers to the island. The bridge is located between Ella and Demodara railway stations and is most famous because of its curved structure. Known to be the best example of a colonial-era railway, the bridge has attracted tourists from around the world. The bridge is approximately 30 m high.

  • start the hike for Little Adam’s peak. You will have refreshments on top of mountain while enjoying endless green views across south coast and sunset.
  • Deriving its name from its big brother, the sacred mountain Adam’s Peak, Little Adam’s Peak is 2243m above sea level. The trail to the mountain is fairly average and would require you to have a medium level of fitness. With marked paths, you’ll have to clamber through some narrow rocky areas to reach the summit. The view from the peak is definitely worth the arduous climb. There are a number of hotels located in the area to cater to the large number of tourists that visit the mountain. The ideal time to start your hike is either in the morning or late evening,

  • Udawalawa National Park was designated as a national park to provide a haven for wild animals that were initially displaced by the construction of the Udawalawa Reservoir. Encompassing an area of 30,821 hectares, you’ll be able to spot wild Sri Lankan elephants, dozens of water birds and other animals that thrive here. The park is one of the more popular reserves on the island. The Udawalawa Elephant Transfer Home is located within the park as well. Established in 1995, it’s home to over 65 orphaned elephants, where they are taken care of until they’re old enough to be released back into the wild. The months between May to September are said to be the best time to spot animals, as most of them leave the thick jungles in search of water.
