Stop At: The Devil's Nose Train Ride, Estacion de Alausi, Riobamba 060150 Ecuador

Experience two of the most interesting destinations in our country. After hotel pick up you will travel to Alausi, a little town considered a national heritage. In this charming town you will take the train known as "The Devil’s Nose". In its day it was considered one of the greatest feats of engineering that the world had seen. This railway was built in 1899 with the intent of linking the coastal city of Guayaquil with the highlands capital of Quito. This amazing ride traverses and descends an almost perpendicular mountain face by using switchbacks. Many lives were lost in the construction of this extraordinary railway.

Duration: 3 hours

Stop At: Ingapirca Ruins, Ingapirca 030356 Ecuador

Our trip continues on the Pan-American Highway to Ingapirca, which is the major Inca archeological site in Ecuador. You will have the chance to appreciate one of the most important Inca structures, an elliptical platform known as the “Sun’s Temple”. Courtyards, terraces and various other ruins are found here as well.

Duration: 45 minutes

Fantastic! The tour was really entertaining and interesting. A LOT of driving... but still worth it all in the end.

Our guide Javier was right on time picking us up and he was extremely knowledgable throughout the tour. We learn't so much about the Ecuadorean people, their customs and way of life. We drove three hours through beautiful country side and the scenery was amazing. The train journey down to the Devils Nose was fun and again, we saw some lovely vistas from the train. At the turn around point, we were entertained by folk dancing . On our return to the main station we had lunch then headed off to the Ingapirca ruins which were really interesting and again, Javier gave a full description of the history of the Incan civilization. In all, a great day out.

We started this tour from Cuenca and drove about 3 hours to Alausi where the trains departs from. Jaime was very engaging and shared his extensive knowledge on the history, culture, and current events of Ecuador. There was not one dull moment with so much to take in from the scenery to the amazing and exciting historical commentary from Jaime. The actual train ride is operated and guided by Ferrocarril de Ecuador where you board with tourists from other tours and solo travelers. We had an amazing time on the train and enjoyed the breathtaking scenery of the Andes. At the bottom of the mountain you have plenty of time to enjoy the local dance team display some of the music and dancing of the Ecuadorian Andes and there is also a restaurant with a large menu of local food and drinks to enjoy. We were blessed with great weather from beginning to end rare for the unpredictable Andes! Ignore the negative commentary on other sites about the train ride, this is truly a great tour and not one to miss for lovers of history and nature.
